BOSTON - Senior Rachel Collins and juniors Molly Swain and Catie Tilton have been named captains for the 2011 Boston University lacrosse team, head coach Liz Robertshaw announced.
The trio will lead a squad that posted an 11-9 record and won its sixth straight America East title in 2010. The Terriers advanced to the NCAA tournament for the eighth time in program history.
"Rachel, Molly and Catie are excellent leaders and great student-athletes who will lead this year's squad," said Robertshaw. "They will compliment each other well both on and off the field and, along with a strong senior class, make a great leadership group."
Collins had a breakout junior campaign, leading the team in ground balls (46) and draw controls (46) and ranking second in caused turnovers (20). An America East All-Conference First Team member, the Winchester, Mass., native was named the conference championship's Most Outstanding Player, garnered all-tournament team recognition and received IWLCA North Region First Team honors.
"Rachel has become a natural leader with her supreme worth ethic and ability to consistently do the right things both on and off the field, "said Robertshaw. "Her teammates see the examples she sets and know how hard they have to work to get there."
A native of Cambridge, Mass., Swain appeared in 15 games in 2010 and totaled three points (1g, 2a), two draw controls and one ground ball and caused turnover. In her career, Swain has played in 22 games and notched six points (2g, 4a), four draw controls and one ground ball and caused turnover.
"Molly has bled BU Lacrosse since she came here," Robertshaw added. "Her teammates look to her and are reminded of the values and the traditions that we associate with being a member of this program. She was a natural pick for captain."
In 2010, Tilton appeared in 19 contests and ranked third on the team with 13 assists. The Cherry Hills Village, Colo., native added seven draw controls, two ground balls and one caused turnover. For her career, Tilton has played in 27 games and collected 25 points (9g, 16a), two caused turnovers, three ground balls and seven draw controls.
"Catie's battled through injuries throughout her career and has become an example of perseverance and compassion," said Robertshaw. "Her teammates look up to her as someone who will do whatever is needed for the good of the program."
The Terriers will open the 2011 season against in-state rival Massachusetts on Feb. 23. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
