Terriers Fall to Providence, 65-55, in Non-Conference Finale
December 31, 2010 | Women's Basketball
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Despite three players reaching double figures, including a team-high 19-point performance from sophomore Chantell Alford, the Boston University women's basketball team (3-9) fell to Providence (7-6), 65-55, on Friday afternoon. Junior Caroline Stewart hauled in 11 rebounds in the loss.
The Friars overcame an 12-point first half deficit and went on a pivotal 11-4 run in the second stanza to claim the 10-point victory. PC scored 17 points off 17 BU miscues and put 22 up on the scoreboard on second chance points. The game closed out the non-conference slate for both teams.
Junior guard Alex Young and sophomore point guard Mo Moran also reached double figures with 16 and 11 points, respectively. The Terriers shot .778 from the charity stripe and .333 from the field.
It was a tightly contested start to the match with four lead changes in the first six minutes, however, BU embarked on a 12-1 run in a quick three-minute span that stretched the lead out to 17-7 and forced Providence into an early timeout.
Alford had the hot hand in the early going with eight of BU's first 14 points. The Friars had a tough time from the field, shooting just 18 percent (3-for-16) in the first 11 minutes, while going scoreless for over six minutes and without a field goal for eight and a half ticks on the clock.
The Friars did not fold though, as they came back to within three points, 19-16, following four straight made free throws and a pair of fastbreak layups. They went on to make it a one-point game, 21-20, with 2:48 remaining in the game.
Over the next two minutes, BU and PC went back and forth until Alford recorded a steal at halfcourt and went in for the layup to give BU the three-point edge, 29-26, going into the locker rooms at halftime.
The second half started much like the first stanza did with both teams exchanging baskets with the score tying, 38-38, at the 13:16 mark. Neither team pulled ahead by more than one possession in the second stanza until the Terriers got into foul trouble and the Friars sunk four consecutive free throws to take the 50-45 lead by the 8:08 mark.
After outscoring BU, 11-4, PC claimed an 11-point advantage, 58-47, at the 4:53 mark and maintained the double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.
BU opens its conference slate with Maine on Sunday (Jan. 2) at Case Gym. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
