BOSTON - The Boston University women's basketball team (2-6) fell to No. 20 St. John's (7-1) on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym. Junior Alex Young scored 11 points with five assists, while freshman Melissa Gallo scored a career-high nine points and junior Caroline Stewart hauled in seven boards.
Young went 5-for-5 from the free throw line and was 3-for-9 from the floor to reach double figures for the 18th consecutive game. Gallo logged a career-best 18 minutes and produced nine points during that time to go along with four rebounds and one assist. Stewart was a presence on defense for the Terriers bringing in six defensive boards with two blocks. Also contributing for the Terriers was sophomore Kristen Sims with seven points and six rebounds.
As a team, BU shot 28.3 percent from the floor, but was 100 percent (7-for-7) from the charity stripe. With nine offensive rebounds, BU was able to convert on 13 second-chance points; however, it turned the ball over 21 times to account for 23 St. John's points.
A pair of long runs gave St. John's a 19-point lead at halftime as it took a 38-19 advantage into the locker rooms at the break. The Terriers hung with the Red Storm to start the contest and took its only lead at 16:14 when Young went in for a fastbreak layup to move the score to 7-6. However, a 13-2 stretch gave the Red Storm a 19-9 edge pushing its lead into double figures and holding the Terriers scoreless for nearly five minutes. Sims nailed a trey from in front of the St. John's bench to snap the streak.
St. John's second run upped the lead to 20 points as it outscored BU 13-0 over five minutes to move the score to 32-12. Gallo pulled up for a jumper in the paint at 4:11 to halt the skid, however, BU was only able to get within 19 points at the break.
In the second stanza, the Terriers got to within 17 points early on, but a pair of layups pushed the advantage back to an insurmountable 20 points and the squad was not able to recover. In that half, Gallo scored seven of her nine points - including one from 3-point range.
BU will have a quick turnaround as it will take on crosstown foe Northeastern on Monday (Dec. 6) at 7 p.m. at NU's Solomon Court.
