BOSTON - In a tightly contested match-up that saw 12 lead changes, the Boston University women's basketball team (16-15) dropped a 64-58 decision to Providence (17-14) in the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament at Case Gym on Thursday night. Rookie Chantell Alford, who broke the freshman scoring record, finished the game with 15 points, while senior Aly Hinton collected a season-high 13 boards as she hauled down her 700th career rebound.
Alford scored 477 points in 30 games this season to break the previous freshman scoring record held by BU's all-time leading scorer Katie Terhune, who set the bar in the 2000-01 season with 438. In Thursday's contest, Hinton also surpassed a career milestone as she brought down her 700th career rebound to become one of just three other Terriers in program history to score 1,000 points and collect 700 boards. She joins the ranks with BU's greats Debbie Miller ('81), Jill Sosnak ('95) and Adrienne Norris ('05).
Joining Alford in double-digit scoring on Thursday was sophomore Caroline Stewart with 10 points. She finished the game with six rebounds.
BU made the most of 15 Providence miscues, scoring 16 points of turnovers, while limiting the Friars to four points in that situation. The Terriers' bench also outscored PC, 6-0; however, the Friars transitioned quickly to produce eight points while holding BU without a point on the fast break. There were 12 lead changes and eight times the score was tied as the game was never beyond two possessions until midway through the second half.
BU's largest lead came at 12:34 in the second half when it took a 48-40 advantage after freshman Caitlynn Moran made two free throws; however, an 11-0 run reclaimed the lead for Providence, 51-48, at 9:07 in the second half.
BU briefly took back the lead at 5:31 on a trey from Hinton, and the squad remained within four points of PC over the next three minutes. A layup from junior Kerry Cashman with 22 seconds left in regulation brought BU to within two, 60-58; however, in the waning seconds the Friars went 4-for-4 from the free throw line to earn the six-point victory.
NOTES: Hinton finishes her career with 1,074 career points and is ranked 14th among BU's scorers. She's the program's all-time leader in games played (126), and ranks in the top 10 in numerous other categories including: free throw percentage (6th, .785), rebounds (6th, 711), 3-pointers (9th, 97) and minutes played (6th, 3,377).
