BOSTON - The No. 13 Boston University lacrosse team fell to Yale by a score of 11-9 on Wednesday afternoon at Nickerson Field, as the Bulldogs built on a one-goal lead late in the first half by reeling off five straight tallies before holding off a Terrier rally. BU held a 37-15 advantage in shots, but could not overcome a 16-save performance by Yale goalkeeper Whitney Quackenbush and both teams now stand at 4-4 on the year.
Seniors McKinley Curro (2g, 1a) and Xan Weitzel (1g, 2a) and freshman Danielle Etrasco (3g) each recorded a team-high three points in the contest.
Yale was paced by sophomore Caroline Crow (3g, 1a) and senior Jenna Block (2g, 2a), who both put up a game-best four points. Freshman Devon Rhodes registered a goal and two assists and junior Kaitlyn Flatley scored twice.
Quackenbush made nine of the her 16 saves in the second half, while the Terriers only recorded two saves on the afternoon with one apiece by senior Rachel Klein (41 minutes) and freshman Kim Elsworth (19 minutes).
The Bulldogs held slim advantages in both ground balls (16-14) and draw controls (12-10) and committed 17 turnovers compared to just 10 by the Terriers.
Yale tallied the first two goals of the game to take a lead it would never relinquish, as BU wasn't able to draw even the rest of the way, despite scoring five of the game's final six goals.
After the Bulldogs took a 4-1 lead just over 12 minutes into the game, BU responded with three of the next four goals, capped by a tally from sophomore Hannah Frey, to make it a 5-4 affair. Senior Jenny Taft scored on a free-position chance to start the run before Curro recorded her first tally of the day.
The last goal of the first half came from Yale, as it began its decisive five-goal run when Block found the back of the net with 5:13 left in the opening half, making it a 6-4 game at the break. The Bulldogs' six first-half goals were scored by six different players.
Yale picked up where it left off by scoring four straight goals to open the half and take what would be its largest lead at 10-4 with 17:25 left to play.
BU attempted to get back in the game by going on a 5-1 run, capped by two goals from Etrasco, but it was not enough, as the Bulldogs escaped with the 11-9 win.
The Terriers will return to action on Saturday (March 24) when they open up their America East schedule with a road contest at Binghamton. Game time is set for noon.
