RICHMOND, Va. - Senior guard Alex Young scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half, but the Boston University women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 72-60 decision to the Richmond Spiders on Friday night at the Robins Center.
Junior guard Mo Moran added 12 points, while classmate Kristen Sims had two key three-pointers in the second half to keep the Terriers close. Senior forward Caroline Stewart was terrific on both the offensive and defensive glass, as she hauled in 13 rebounds to go along with eight points
Moran stole the show early on, as she kick-started the Terrier offense with a pair of three-pointers to build a 10-6 lead at the first media timeout. Richmond responded with a pair of treys of its own, and soon the Spiders were ahead by as many as 12 points.
BU began to chip away at the lead in the final two minutes, as Young and junior guard Chantell Alford each connected from beyond the arc to help bring BU within seven at the half, 35-28.
The Terriers came out flying in the second half, as they ran the floor well and pressured the Richmond ball-handlers. That good defense translated into an explosive offense, as the Terriers erased the seven point halftime deficit thanks to hot shooting from Young, who had 11 points within the first nine minutes of the stanza.
BU finally regained the lead at 43-42 with 14:04 left to play, and earned its largest lead of the game, 54-50, with under 10 minutes to go in the half. However, despite the Terriers' strong defense, Liz Brown and Rachael Bilney got hot for the Spiders. Brown scored a pair of layups and Bilney knocked down two straight three-pointers to give Richmond a 58-54 lead. The duo scored 22 of the Spiders' final 27 points.
BU will be back on the court on Tuesday night when the Terriers host crosstown rival Northeastern at Case Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
