BALTIMORE, Md. - America East Co-Player of the Year Danielle Etrasco has earned a spot on the U.S. Women's Lacrosse National Team, the national governing body announced Tuesday. A First Team IWLCA Northeast All-Region honoree, she is only one of five rising juniors to be named to the 36-player roster.
More than 80 of the top lacrosse players in the country competed in a three-day tryout.
The 2011-12 team will lay the foundation for the 2013 squad that will participate in the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario. This year's squad will compete at several events this year, including at the Stars & Stripes Weekend in October and the Champion Challenge in January.
BU's sixth-year head coach Liz Robertshaw was named an assistant coach for the national team back in 2009 and will remain with the program through the 2013 World Cup.
The lone America East representative on the squad, Etrasco enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign with the Terriers. The attacker ranked in the top 10 in the country in both goals (57) and goals per game (3.35), while her four game-winning markers tied for second in the conference and 2.41 draw controls per game tied for fourth.
In a must-win game on April 30, the America East All-Conference First Team member found the back of the net on all nine of her shot attempts to single-handedly outscore Vermont. The win propelled the Terriers to the conference tournament for the 13th straight year, and the nine goals are a 2011 NCAA Division I single-game high.
The Massapequa, N.Y., native, who appeared in the May 23 issue of Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd," also chipped in 41 draw controls, 16 ground balls, nine caused turnovers and eight assists.
