BOSTON - The Boston University lacrosse team has named Katie Hertsch as an assistant coach and Sarah Bullard as a volunteer assistant coach, sixth-year head coach Liz Robertshaw announced on Monday.
"I am extremely excited about Katie and Sarah joining our staff the upcoming 2011-12 season," Robertshaw said. "The combined knowledge from both of these individuals having played on the Division I and international levels will surely bring a new dimension to BU lacrosse. There is a tremendous amount of work ahead of us as we look to build the program, and the addition of two of the hardest working collegiate players I have ever seen will help to set a precedent for our players"
Hertsch (Westminster, Md.), a two-time member of the U.S. National Team (2010-11) comes to BU after a stellar three-year career as a defender at Hofstra. There, she was named to the All-CAA First Team in 2010 and 2011 and earned IWLCA All-Region honors in 2010 and 2011. Hertsch left Hofstra third all-time in ground balls (138), fifth in caused turnovers (70) and sixth in draws (110). Prior to her time at Hofstra, Hertsch played one year at Ohio University before the program was discontinued.
"Having worked with her on the U.S. National Team and watching her throughout a solid playing career at Hofstra I saw what a tenacious defender and strong team player she is," Robertshaw said. "Katie has high expectations for herself and I believe she will push our players to have the same mentality and help them to compete at the highest levels. It's going to be fun to see how she shapes our defensive unit over the coming year."
Bullard (Needham, Mass.) arrives at BU after a fantastic four-year career as a midfielder at Duke. As team captain last season, she helped lead the Blue Devils to the 2011 NCAA semifinals. She was an IWLCA All-American in 2009 and 2010, and also earned First-Team All-ACC honors in 2009 and 2010. She has also been a fixture on the international scene, as she was a member of the U.S. National Team that captured a gold medal at the 2009 World Cup.
"I have known Sarah for past five years having watched and played against her during her time at Duke as well as working with her on the U.S. National Team," Robertshaw said. "Her 'team- first' mentality and solid work ethic have allowed her to reach some of the highest achievements in lacrosse. I believe she has a wealth of knowledge to share with our players and I look forward to her working with us."
The BU lacrosse team will host its annual alumni game on Saturday at Nickerson Field at 12 p.m.
