ALLSTON, Mass. - Thanks to three second-half goals, the No. 12 Boston University field hockey team posted a 3-1 home victory over No. 25 Maine on Friday evening at Jordan Field. The Terriers improve to 9-4 overall and 3-0 in America East play.

The Black Bears (9-6, 2-1 America East) scored on their first shot of the game and took a 1-0 lead into halftime before junior Ella Gunson, senior Jacinda McLeod and freshman Rachel Coll all found the boards off second-half corners to lift BU to the victory.

Holly Stewart got the visitors on the board first when she tipped in the ball at the goalmouth following a pass from the lower right circle by Elke Jacobse at the 10:45 mark.

Maine netminder Alicia Frisch was impressive in the first half, stopping all five shots she faced to allow the visitors to take a 1-0 lead into the break.

The Terriers turned the tides after halftime, however, scoring on three of the six corners they drew in the half.

In the 44th minute, Gunson took a direct insert from Koll before drilling a shot that went off a Maine stick and high into the netting for an equalizer.

Under five minutes later, the Terriers had a perfectly executed corner, as McLeod blasted the ball off Frisch and in from the top of the circle. Senior Leslie Zules and junior Kat Spring provided the assists on what was the eventual game-winner.

Coll capped the scoring at the 55:04 mark from the middle of the circle following a perfect feed from the right side by junior Amira Downes.

BU held a commanding 20-4 advantage in shots and earned nine corners while allowing just one.

Senior Jess Maroney earned the win in goal for BU, blanking the Black Bears in the second half while making two saves. Sophomore Valentina Cerda Eimbcke allowed the Maine goal in the first half and Frish finished the night with seven saves in the Maine cage.

BU is now tied with No. 20 New Hampshire for first place in the America East standings with identical 3-0 records. The two teams will meet next Friday in Durham, N.H.

The Terriers will return to action on Sunday (Oct. 14) when they visit Hofstra for a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 1 p.m.

Hofstra is 5-8 on the year and has dropped its last five contests, including a 2-1 road game against Delaware in it last outing on Sunday. Sophomore Jonel Boileau leads the Pride offense with 20 points on the strength of nine goals.
