BOSTON – The Boston University women’s basketball team heads to Michigan for a pair of post-Thanksgiving games this weekend. BU will first visit Ypsilanti, Mich., to face Eastern Michigan on Friday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m., before heading to Ann Arbor, Mich., to play Michigan on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 4 p.m.
The Terriers are playing in back-to-back games that are not part of a tournament for the first time since the 1984 season when they lost to St. Peters, 67-62, on Nov. 25, 1984, before defeating Fairleigh Dickinson, 70-49, on Nov. 26, 1984.
BU has played each team it will face this weekend once before. The Terriers are 1-0 all-time against Eastern Michigan, defeating the Eagles, 65-59, on Dec. 2, 2006 in the Verizon Wireless/Arizona State Classic in Tempe, Ariz. BU is 0-1 against Michigan with the only meeting coming on Feb. 9, 1980 in the Lady Lion Classic in State College, Pa. The Wolverines prevailed, 82-76.
BU enters the weekend with a 2-2 record after falling to crosstown rival Northeastern on Tuesday night. Senior Chantell Alford led the team in scoring for the fourth consecutive game as she netted 20 points. Junior Danielle Callahan scored a career-high 18 points while senior Kristen Sims chipped in a season-best 12 points. All three players connected on four shots from beyond the arc.
Alford leads the team in scoring with 21.3 ppg while classmate Mo Moran is also scoring in double-digits with 10.0 ppg. Junior Rashidat Agboola leads the team with 8.8 rpg. As a team, the Terriers average 60.2 ppg and are shooting 38.5 percent from the field.
The Terriers’ first opponent of the weekend, Eastern Michigan, owns a 1-2 record on the season after dropping its past two games. The Eagles opened the season with a 50-47 come-from-behind victory over Northeastern on Nov. 11. Mirana Tate is the only player averaging double-digits for Eastern Michigan with 17.3 ppg. India Hairston leads the team with 7.3 rpg.
Head coach Tory Verdi is in his first season leading the Eagles and inherited a team that went 23-9 lead season en route to winning the MAC Championship and earning an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Michigan will host the Terriers on Saturday afternoon after playing Harvard on Friday night. The Wolverines are 3-1 on the season and are coming off a 72-29 victory over Seton Hall on Monday night. Michigan has three players averaging double-digits in scoring with Rachel Sheffer leading the way with 16.3 ppg and 7.0 rpg.
