BOSTON - The Boston University women's basketball team opened its 2012-13 campaign with a 52-46 win over cross-town rival Boston College Friday night at Case Gym. BU moves to 1-0 after its first game for the second straight season and fifth time in head coach Kelly Greenberg's nine year tenure.
Friday's win also marked the 150th victory for Greenberg as head coach at BU. Her record with the Terriers now stands at 150-101.
The Terriers defeated the Eagles for the second straight season after topping BC, 70-62, on Dec. 3, 2011. It marks the first time BU has strung together back-to-back victories over BC since 1984. The Terriers now own a 10-9 advantage in the series.
Senior Chantell Alford led all players with 17 points and added seven rebounds while junior Rashidat Agboola totaled 12 points and five rebounds. Senior Mo Moran chipped in 11 points and dished out a game-best seven assists. Junior Whitney Turner led the team with eight rebounds while adding six points and three blocks.
Kerri Shields led the Eagles with 11 points while Katie Zenevitch collected a game-high 15 rebounds.
The Terriers ended the game with a 36.7 field goal percentage while the Eagles shot 31.3 percent from the field. BC won the battle on the board, out-rebounding BU, 41-28, but the Eagles turned the ball over 20 times compared to BU's 10.
The Eagles held a 20-19 advantage after the first half as both teams got off to a slow start. After the Terriers jumped out to a 5-0 lead, BC tied the game at 7-7 with a jumper from Kristen Doherty. Both teams then went scoreless for almost four minutes before a free throw from Agboola at 11:47 put BU back on top.
BC regained the advantage with less than 10 minutes to play in the half following a 3-pointer from Nicole Boudreau. Offense was hard to come by in the remainder of the half, as the Eagles took a 20-19 lead into the break.
BU took the lead on its first possession of the second half with a layup from Turner before BC went on a 12-2 run over the next five and a half minutes. Agboola's jumper at the 14:04 mark cut into the deficit and the Terriers regained the advantage with a three-point from junior Danielle Callahan to go up, 33-32, with 12:08 remaining in regulation.
The Eagles brought the game within two points, 36-34, following a pair of free throws by Tessah Holt, but Callahan hit her second trey of the game to extend BU's lead. Moran and Alford followed with 3-pointers of their own to put BU up, 45-36, with 4:13 remaining.
The Terriers held the lead for the remainder of the game, although BC brought it to within four, 50-46, with eight seconds remaining, but a pair of free throws from Moran in the final seconds sealed the 52-46 victory for BU.
The Terriers return to action Monday (Nov. 12) when they welcome No. 17/22 West Virginia to Case Gym. It will be the first time in program history that BU has hosted a Big 12 school. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
