BOSTON - Playing for its fifth consecutive victory, the Boston University women’s basketball team hosts Harvard Monday (Dec. 10) at Case Gym. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
All fans at the game will be eligible to win tickets to the 2013 Men’s Ice Hockey Beanpot. Fans can bring an unused, unwrapped toy to the game and receive half price admission in support of the Toys For Tots program.
Monday’s game marks the 28th meeting between the Terriers and the Crimson and the 21st consecutive season that BU will face Harvard on the hardwood. Harvard holds a slight 14-13 advantage over BU following a 62-57 win last season for its third straight victory in the series.
Winners of their last four games, the Terriers enter Monday night’s game with a 7-3 record following Saturday night’s 62-56 overtime victory at Marist. With the game tied at 49-49 after regulation, BU opened the extra period with a 7-2 run to take a 56-51 lead with 2:32 remaining. The Terriers did not score another field goal for the remainder of overtime but netted six additional points from the charity stripe to capture the 62-56 victory and improve to 5-4 all-time against Marist.
Senior Chantell Alford leads BU with 18.5 ppg while adding 5.3 rpg. The guard is shooting 45.9 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc, both of which lead the team. Fellow senior Mo Moran is second on the team with 11.1 ppg and leads BU with 6.8 apg. Junior Rashidat Agboola leads the team with 9.4 rpg and is third with 10.1 ppg.
As a team, BU averages 62.0 ppg and is shooting 39.9 percent from the field. Four of the Terriers’ seven wins have come by double-digit margins while BU averages a +7.4 scoring margin.
Harvard enters Monday’s game with a 7-2 record and a four-game winning streak. In their last game, the Crimson defeated Big East member Providence, 73-59, on Dec. 4. Three players average double-digit scoring performances for the Crimson with Christine Clark leading the way with 17.6 ppg. Victoria Lippert is second on the team with 13.1 ppg and Temi Fagbenie ranks third with 10.5 ppg. Lippert also leads the team with 6.0 rpg.
As a team, Harvard averages 69.1 ppg and is shooting 46.0 percent from the field and 43.9 percent from beyond the arc. BU and Harvard have played two common opponents this season, Eastern Michigan and Michigan. The Crimson fell at Michigan, 72-61, and defeated Eastern Michigan, 67-63.
Head coach Kathy Delaney-Smith is in her 31st season with the Crimson. She has guided Harvard to nine 20-win seasons, 11 Ivy titles, a .500 record or better in 23 of the last 24 campaigns and nine postseason appearances.
BU will take a 19 day break for exams and the holidays before returning to the court for the Christmas City Classic in Bethlehem, Pa., on Dec. 29 and 30. The Terriers will take on Fairleigh Dickinson on day one of the tournament before facing Lehigh the next day.
