BOSTON - The Boston University women’s soccer team returned to its winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Monmouth on Friday night at Nickerson Field. With the win, BU improves to 3-2-0 on the season while the loss drops Monmouth to 1-3-0.
Sophomore Ana Cuffia scored her first goal of the season while junior Emma Clark recorded her second goal of the year on a penalty kick to lead the Terriers to victory. Clark and classmate Megan McGoldrick led the team with two shots apiece.
Junior Andrea Green stood tall in net for the Terriers and recorded two saves for her third career shutout. BU held a 10-4 shot advantage over Monmouth. The Terriers posted six shots on goal and Monmouth’s keeper, Ashley Lewis, made four saves.
Cuffia put the Terriers up early in the contest when she scored off a cross from the right side by McGoldrick. Cuffia trapped the ball and fired a shot to the top left corner of the net to give BU a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute.
The Hawks had a chance to tie the game in the 35th minute when Monique Goncalves lined up for a corner kick and drove the ball 10 yards in front of the net. Claudia Vazquez positioned herself for the header and fired it towards the goal but Green was there to make the save.
Sophomore Taylor Krebs presented the Terriers with another scoring opportunity in the 75th minute on a breakaway down the left sideline. Krebs managed to dribble past the defenders and shoot the ball from the left of the net but Lewis stopped the shot.
BU earned its second goal of the night in the 81st minute from a penalty kick taken by Clark. The Terriers had control of the ball in front of the Hawks’ goal and Monmouth’s keeper stepped out of the net in attempt to gather a loose ball. With the keeper out of position, senior Brea Hewitt made a play for the ball in attempt to shoot on the empty net but was tripped up by the goal keeper who was whistled for a foul. BU was rewarded a penalty kick and Clark capitalized on the opportunity to seal the 2-0 victory for BU.
The Terriers begin a stretch of three games against 2011 NCAA tournament teams when BU makes the short trip to Harvard on Monday, Sept. 3. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
