ALLSTON, Mass. - The No. 12 Boston University field hockey team dropped a 2-0 contest to No. 7 Virginia on Sunday afternoon at Jordan Field. The Terriers (6-3) allowed just one corner and held an 8-4 shot advantage at halftime, but the Cavaliers (9-2) scored a pair of first-half goals to earn the win.
Rachel Sumfest opened the scoring 7:41 into the contest when she converted from above the right post following a nice feed by Hadley Bell, who penetrated the circle from the right side. The goal came on UVA's first shot of the contest.
After that goal, BU dominated the first half territorially and on the statsheet. The Terriers recorded the game's next eight shots and earned four corners in the opening half.
The visiting Cavaliers were able to double their advantage before the break, however, as Paige Selenski drilled a reverse-stick shot to the boards from the top of the circle at the 27:25 mark. Selenski corralled the ball after an entry pass was blocked by the BU defense.
Virginia's defense held its ground the rest of the way, preventing the Terriers from getting any good scoring chances in the second half.
Senior Jess Maroney came on in goal at halftime and stopped all three shots on goal she faced. Sophomore Valentina Cerda Eimbcke did not record a save while in goal during the first half.
Jenny Johnstone picked up the shutout in goal for the Cavaliers and made three saves, all in the first half.
For the game, Virginia held a 10-8 shot advantage. BU earned four corners while allowing only one, which did not come until the 61st minute. The Cavaliers entered the game averaging 7.3 corners per game.
The Terriers will return to action on Friday (Sept. 28) when they visit Albany for their America East opener. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
