CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Senior Jess Maroney (Media, Pa.) and freshman Rachel Coll (Greymouth, New Zealand) of the Boston University field hockey team have been named the America East Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
Maroney came on at halftime of each of the Terriers' games this week and did not allow a goal in 85:51 in the BU cage. She stopped all seven shots on goal she faced, including a four-save performance in a 3-2 double-overtime victory at No. 25 Massachusetts on Tuesday.
The game-winner against the Minutewomen came from the stick of Coll, who registered her first collegiate goal just 51 seconds into the second overtime session to lead BU to the key road victory. Coll knocked in a centering pass from fellow New Zealand native Ella Gunson, who assisted on all three goals in the win.
Maroney, who also recorded three saves and a second-half shutout against No. 7 Virginia on Sunday, earned the weekly defensive accolade for the second time this season. The senior ranks amongst the nation's best this season in goals-against average (1.04) and save percentage (.839). Both marks are tops amongst America East netminders.
The 12th-ranked Terriers will return to action on Friday (Sept. 28) when they visit No. 21 Albany in the America East opener for both teams. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
