STORRS, Conn. - The Boston University field hockey team finished up its weekend road trip on Sunday with a 5-1 loss to fourth-ranked Connecticut. Junior Nell Burdis scored her first collegiate goal for the Terriers, who move to 8-5 on the season.
BU did not allow the Huskies to get on the scoreboard until the final minute of the first half and UConn was held to its third-lowest corner total this season with six.
The Huskies, however, made it a 2-0 contest 65 seconds into the second half before securing a 5-0 cushion by the 61st minute.
The Terriers' goal was started by sophomore Sofi Laurito on a restart in front of the UConn bench, as she dribbled around the Husky defense while accelerating through the midfield before finding freshman Hester van der Laan above the circle.
An entry ball by van der Laan found its way to Burdis, who was six yards above the left post, and the junior blasted it home with 2:27 left for her first goal in a BU uniform. It was only the sixth time this season that UConn allowed a second-half goal.
UConn, which improved to 12-1 on the season, was paced by Roisin Upton, who had two goals and two assists. Marie Elana Bolles, Chloe Hunnable and Montana Fleming each added a goal for the Huskies.
Junior goalkeeper Valentina Cerda Eimbcke turned in a nine-save performance for the Terriers, who registered seven shots and two corners. Sarah Mansfield earned the win in goal with two saves.
BU will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 19) when it hosts Bucknell for a Patriot League contest at New Balance Field. Game time is set for noon.
