Field Hockey to Visit Providence on Sunday

The Boston University field hockey team (1-0) will make its first road trip of the season on Sunday (Aug. 30) when it visits Providence. Game time at Lennon Family Field is set for noon.
The Terriers opened their 2026 season with a home victory on Friday, topping Merrimack by a score of 7-2.

- Sarah Shute earned a win in her debut as head coach of the Terriers on Friday as BU topped Merrimack in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
- Senior Alex Purcell set up classmate Bella Bergner for two goals while sophomore Lucy Johnson scored the first two goals of her career.
- Graduate student Maddie Hudson, who has missed three full seasons due to injury, recorded her first tally as a Terrier and freshman Jenna Park scored just under two minutes into her collegiate career.
- Graduate student Caroline O'Brien also added a goal and is back after one of the best offensive seasons in program history, leading the 2025 Patriot League champions in points (37), goals (15) and assists (7).
- O'Brien and senior Nicole Lauro were named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team and joined senior Olivia Hammer, senior Maggie Driscoll and sophomore Molly Driscoll on the 2026 NFHCA Collegiate Watchlist.
- Senior Sophie Ortyl earned 17 starts in goal last season, collecting eight wins while posting a 2.53 goals-against average and a .641 save percentage.
- BU was selected to finish third in the Patriot League preseason poll behind American and Lafayette.
- Hudson and Maggie Driscoll will serve as co-captains for the 2026 season.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
- The Friars opened their season on Friday with a 3-1 road loss to Boston College.
- All four goals came in the fourth quarter as PC made it 1-1 with 7 minutes to play before the Eagles scored a pair of late goals.
- Senior Bo Martina, the Preseason Big East Midfielder of the Year, is the team's leading returner in points with 22 (9g, 4a) while classmate Lily Procaccianti added 20 last year on the strength of a team-best nine goals.
- Martina and senior Carly van Benten were named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
- Sophomore Ava Porter returns in goal after starting 16 games as a rookie and posting a .748 save percentage and 1.64 goals-against average.
- PC was picked sixth in the Big East Preseason Poll.
SERIES HISTORY
- BU is 23-13 all-time against the Friars.
- Last year in the season opener at New Balance Field, both teams scored twice in regulation before the Friars came away with a win in a shootout.
- The Terriers have won eight of the past 10 meetings, including a 3-0 road victory in the 2024 season opener.
- Ortyl made seven saves in that game to earn a shutout in her first career start.

- The Terriers will hit the road again on Friday (Sept. 4) when they visit No. 15 Massachusetts.
