Terriers Fall at Brown, 5-4, in Shootout
September 11, 2026 | Field Hockey
Senior Nicole Lauro and sophomore Lucy Johnson each recorded a goal and an assist while senior Alex Purcell and sophomore Molly Driscoll each added a goal. Graduate student Caroline O'Brien notched an assist. BU outshot the Bears, 29-16, and held a commanding 14-3 advantage in corners,
The Terriers built leads of 2-0 and 4-2 but the Bears erased both deficits and neither team was able to find the back of the cage in overtime. BU was up 2-1 after three rounds of the shootout but Brown came back once again, converting in the final two rounds while stopping The Terriers' final two tries.Â
Senior Sophie Ortyl made six saves for the Terriers, who move to 3-2 on the season. Brown improves to 2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU opened the scoring in the 17th minute off a corner when Lauro found Purcell on the left side for a hard shot inside the near post.
- The Terriers swarmed the cage again minutes later, putting two shots on goal that were stopped before O'Brien collected the rebound and found Lauro, who put the ball between Brown goalkeeper Ellie Parker's legs for a 2-0 lead at 19:30.
- The Bears climbed back into the game with two goals in less than two minutes as Grace Almeida and Kiersten Smith scored at 24:39 and 26:30, respectively, to make it a 2-2 contest.
- Off a corner in the 37th minute, the Terriers went back on top, as sophomore Rachel Turer and Driscoll fired shots from the left side with the latter resulting in a defensive save that elevated the ball at the goalmouth, where Johnson tipped it home for a 3-2 lead.
- An impressive play in transition put BU up by two again as junior Shea Freda pushed the ball through the left midfield to Johnson, who created space before finding Driscoll in the circle. Driscoll drew out Parker and slipped the ball past her at the 46:20 mark.
- The Bears mustered another comeback with Sophia Clark knocking in a second chance at 51:33 before the Bears scored via its only corner in regulation as they drew a stroke off the play and Kate Siedem converted with 7:08 left in the fourth.
- Brown had the only two corners of overtime but Ortyl was up to the task each time.
- In the shootout, both teams were stopped in the first round before O'Brien gave a 1-0 lead with a successful try in the second round.
- Both teams were successful in the third round with freshman Jenna Park converting for BU.
- Tied 2-2 entering the final round, Driscoll missed her shot and Mia Karine Myklebust clinched the win for the Bears.
- Johnson leads the Terriers in points (12) and goals (6) and has scored in four of the team's five contests.Â
- Purcell already has seven points (2g, 3a) this season after entering the year with four points in her BU career.
- Parker made 10 saves in goal for the Bears.
- BU will return to action on Sunday (Sept. 13) when it hosts Maine.
- Game time at New Balance Field is set for 1 p.m.
