BOSTON - The Boston University field hockey team will look for its first win over a ranked opponent this season when it welcomes No. 13 Massachusetts to New Balance Field on Sunday (Oct. 6). Game time is 3 p.m.
The Terriers are coming off a 2-0 Patriot League win at Holy Cross on Sunday. That victory pushed BU's record to 7-3 on the year and 2-1 in conference play.
The Minutewomen moved to 8-4 on the year on Wednesday with a 2-0 road win against Northeastern. UMass opened the year with five straight wins to go as high as No. 7 in the national poll, but have gone 3-4 since, though two losses came to top squads Maryland and Connecticut.
BU holds a 19-14-2 advantage in its all-time series with the Minutewomen and has won the last 10 meetings, including a 3-2 double-overtime road victory last season. UMass' last victory over the Terriers came in 2001 in Boston.
Sophomore Rachel Coll, who scored the overtime winner in last year's meeting in Amherst, returned to the BU lineup on Friday after missing three games due to injury.
UMass has been paced this season by sophomore Brooke Sabia, who ranks fourth in the country in goals with 11. Seniors Hannah Prince (2g, 5a) and Alexa Sikalis (1g, 7a) have added nine points each.
Sophomore Sam Carlino has played every minute in goal for UMass this season and sports a 1.56 goals-against average and a .721 save percentage.
The Terriers have benefited from a balance scoring attack this season, as sophomore Sofi Laurito (5g) and senior Anne Fruitema (4g, 2a) share the team lead in points with 10 each. Freshman Amanda Cassera has contributed eight points on four goals and senior Ysi Schieb has seven points on the strength of a team-best five assists.
Junior Valentina Cerda Eimbcke is enjoying a fantastic season in the BU goal with an .810 save percentage and a 1.06 goals-against average, which both rank in the top 10 nationally.
