STORRS, Conn. – In a game that featured 21 lead changes, the Boston University women’s basketball team was edged by St. Bonaventure, 65-64, on Saturday afternoon at Gampel Pavilion in the second day of the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge.
Freshman Sarah Hope led BU with a career-best five 3-pointers for 15 points. Senior Whitney Turner and sophomore Katie Poppe tied for second on the team with 10 points each while junior Mollie McKendrick led the Terriers with eight rebounds.
Senior Rashidat Agboola finished with nine points, seven rebounds and three blocks while classmate Danielle Callahan totaled six points and six assists.
Katie Healy led the Bonnies with 20 points while Nyla Rueter was second on the team with 16 points. Hannah Little posted a double-double for St. Bonaventure with a game-high 18 rebounds to go with 13 points.
BU finished with a 41.2 percent (21-of-51) field goal percentage and went 10-of-25 from beyond the arc. St. Bonaventure shot 38.1 percent from the floor and 70 percent (7-of-10) from the 3-point line.
The Bonnies out-rebounded the Terriers, 44-31. Both teams committed 10 turnovers.
The opening 20 minutes were closely contested with 18 lead changes. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Poppe and Callahan gave the Terriers an 8-6 advantage at the first media timeout on the floor at 15:09 but the Bonnies were right there to answer every basket by the Terriers.
Five different Terriers connected on a shot from beyond the arc in the opening half, including Hope who hit a pair of treys to give BU its largest lead of the half, 33-28, with 2:54 remaining.
Poppe and Chelsea Booker exchanged treys in the final minute of the half for BU to take the 36-35 lead into the break.
The start of the second half mirrored the first period of play, as neither team could gain much separation. A 3-pointer from Rueter tied the game at 42-42 after the first media time out and the Bonnies extended their lead to 47-42 with another trey by Rueter. The Terriers knotted the game for the fourth time following a pair of free throws from Callahan with 11:55 on the clock.
A 7-0 spurt gave the Bonnies their largest lead of the game, 55-48, but the Terriers began to chip away the deficit with two shots from the charity stripe by Poppe. Hope then checked into the game and hit three consecutive 3-pointers to put BU back on top, 59-57, with 8:43 remaining.
BU hit one basket in the next four minutes, a jumper by McKendrick with 4:29 on the clock to make it a one-point game, 62-61, with 4:29 to play. Callahan added a free throw to tie the game for the sixth time at 62-62 with 1:30 remaining but the Bonnies took the lead off a Rueter layup with a minute remaining.
Little gave St. Bonaventure a three-point cushion off a free throw with 18 seconds remaining. Agboola hit a final layup for the Terriers with 0.7 seconds on the clock, as BU fell just short, 65-64.
BU closes out the campus round of the Basketball Hall of Fame Challenge on Sunday (Nov. 24) when the Terriers face Monmouth. Sunday’s game will be played at the XL Center in Hartford and will begin at 2 p.m.
