
Women's Basketball Tops Vermont, 56-47

BURLINGTON, Vt. - In the 72nd meeting between the conference rivals, the Boston University women's basketball team defeated Vermont, 56-47, Wednesday night at Patrick Gym. The win improves BU's record to 21-4 on the season and 11-1 in league action while Vermont drops to 7-17 on the year and 4-7 in conference play.
Senior Mo Moran led a trio of Terriers in double-digits with 12 points and a team-high five assists and four steals. Juniors Whitney Turner and Danielle Callahan added 10 points each while classmate Rashidat Agboola led the team with 10 rebounds in addition to adding eight points.
Sophomore Mollie McKendrick matched her career-highs in both points (eight) and rebounds (eight) in 14 minutes coming off the bench for the Terriers. Senior Chantell Alford finished with six points, four assists and three steals.
Lauren Buschmann led Vermont with 17 points, including an 11-of-14 performance from the charity stripe. Tierra Shumpert also finished in double-digits with 12 points while Gracia Hutson finished with a team-high nine rebounds.
BU finished the game with a 39.6 field goal percentage (21-of-53) and went 11-of-22 from the free throw line. Vermont concluded with a 27.8 (15-of-54) field goal percentage and went 68.4 percent (13-of-19) from the charity stripe.
The Catamounts out-rebounded the Terriers, 48-35, but committed 18 turnovers compared to BU's eight.
The first seven minutes of the game featured five ties and three lead changes before Vermont took a 12-10 advantage following a jumper from Shumpert with 12:34 to play. Callahan responded for the Terriers on the other end with a 3-pointer to spark eight unanswered points from the junior. Callahan's initial trey ignited a 23-3 run by BU that spanned the remainder of the opening period.
BU used scoring contributions from six different players during the run that lasted the final 12 minutes of the half. Vermont interrupted BU's 12 unanswered points with a free throw from Buschmann at the 8:33 mark and the Catamounts only other points of the opening period came via two shots from the charity stripe by Sam Brenner with 17 seconds to go. By then, the Terriers had a 31-15 advantage and Alford scored her first points of the game in the final seconds to send BU into the break with a 33-15 lead.
The Terriers scored the first two baskets of the second half to extend their run to 27-3 before Vermont got back on the board with a jumper from Shumpert just under two minutes into the period to start a 9-2 run for the Catamounts. BU only scored from the foul line over the next minutes before McKendrick got BU back on the board with a field goal. The sophomore then scored again to give BU a 20 point lead, 47-27, with 7:22 to play.
The Catamounts went on a 10-0 run to bring BU's lead to 10 points, 47-37, with 4:17 to play following a 3-pointer from Shumpert. The Terriers extended their lead to 13 following a layup from Agboola with 2:47 to play before Buschmann hit a jumper and a free throw. A basket from Moran kept the Terriers lead in double-digits with 1:04 to play but Buschmann again brought the margin down to 10 with two shots from the charity stripe.
Moran sank BU's final two free throws and Shumpert hit the game's final basket, as BU held on for the 56-47 victory.
The Terriers return home to Case Gym on Saturday (Feb. 16) to host New Hampshire. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
