BOSTON - The Boston University field hockey team (9-7) will wrap up the non-conference portion of its schedule on Sunday (Oct. 26) when it welcomes eighth-ranked Virginia (12-6) to New Balance Field. The game, which will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network, starts at noon.
The Terriers are coming off a 3-1 road victory against defending Patriot League champion American on Friday and have now won five of their past seven contests.
Despite their 5-3 loss at No. 14 Boston College on Friday, the Cavaliers shared the ACC regular-season title and will be the top seed for the conference tournament. Since defeating North Carolina for its ninth straight win on Oct. 3, Virginia has dropped four of its past six games. Sunday's game is Virginia's regular-season finale.
BU is 4-2 in six all-time tilts with the Cavaliers, but both of Virginia's wins have come in the past two, including a 2-0 contest in the most recent meeting in 2012.
Virginia is paced by one of the top talents in the country in freshman Tara Vittese. She ranks third amongst Division I players in points per game at 2.72 with 16 goals and 17 assists for 48 points.
Sophomore Caleigh Foust has added 29 points on 13 goals and three assists, while classmates Lucy Hyams (23) and Riley Tata (22) have combined for 45 points.
In goal, senior Jenny Johnstone has started all but one contest this season and sports a 1.93 goals-against average and a .714 save percentage.
The Cavaliers have outshot their opponents by a 320-199 margin and have converted all six of their penalty strokes this season.
BU also has had strong scoring efforts all season from underclassmen. Sophomore Amanda Cassera leads all Patriot League players in points (21) and goals (9) while fellow second-year standouts Hester van der Laan (6g, 1a) and Taylor Blood (5g, 1a) have contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Junior Sofi Laurito has earned a team-best five assists and is tied for fourth on the team in goals at three with junior Rachel Coll and freshman Kali Shumock.
Valentina Cerda Eimbcke continues to have a strong senior season in the BU goal and currently has a 1.59 goals-against average to go along with a .743 save percentage.
The Terriers have outscored their opponents in both the first (12-9) and second (18-15) halves this season and haven't given up more than one goal in regulation in any of their previous seven contests.
