Late Comeback Falls Flat Against Yale
December 6, 2014 | Women's Basketball
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - A late comeback fell short and the Boston University women's basketball team suffered a 66-59 setback at Yale on Saturday afternoon. The Terriers (3-5) look to bounce back on Tuesday when they head to Rhode Island for a matchup with the Rams at 7 p.m.
Clodagh Scannell found her stride against the Bulldogs, scoring 16 points off the bench including 12 in the second half. Meghan Green also contributed 16 points and grabbed six boards while Mollie McKendrick scored 11 and dished out four assists.
BU had its best performance from the field of the season, shooting 48 percent (24-50) and held Yale to 36.2 percent including 18.8 percent from long range.
The Terriers dominated the post, outscoring Yale 34-20 in the paint while the Bulldogs pulled down 15 offensive boards that turned into 11 points. One of the biggest difference makers in the game was turnovers, however, with BU giving the ball up 21 times that translated into 14 points on the other end.
The Terriers worked the inside well to begin the game, starting things off with a 4-0 lead. Green was strong in the paint, scoring six of BU's first eight points by posting up under the basket. The Bulldogs fought back quickly, however, tying the game twice before going on an 18-4 run that gave Yale its largest lead of the game, a 12-point advantage.
BU scored the next eight points, however, to cut the lead down to three points with just over three minutes to play in the first period but Yale did not relent for the final minutes and took a 30-23 lead going into halftime.
The Terriers pressured early in the second half, whittling down the Bulldog lead to two points just over four minutes into the final period. Yale came right back, however, and went on a 8-2 run to regain an eight point lead but BU turned on the jets halfway through the period and countered with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 48-48 with 5:30 remaining.
McKendrick and Scannell kept attacking the rim and eventually regained the lead and took as much as a three-point advantage with under three minutes left in the game. A costly foul by Sarah Hope that gave Yale a three-point play would ultimately change the fates of the game, however, and the Terriers were unable to hold on and come up with a win.
