
Women's Basketball Holds Off Lafayette, 61-59

EASTON, Pa. – Led by three players scoring in double-digits, the Boston University women’s basketball team defeated Lafayette, 61-59, on Saturday afternoon at the Kirby Sports Center. The Terriers snapped their three-game losing streak to move to 9-16 on the season (4-8 Patriot League) while Lafayette goes to 12-11 (6-6 PL).
Senior Rashidat Agboola and junior Mollie McKendrick reached double-figures for the second consecutive game, as Agboola led the team with 20 points and added eight rebounds while McKendrick scored 19 points. Sophomore Clodagh Scannell added 13 points and fell just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds.
Entering the day with a four-game winning streak, Lafayette featured two players in double-figures. Brya Freeland led the Leopards with 13 points while Danielle Fiacco posted a double-double off of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Emily Homan, Linnel Macklin and Madeline Fahan added nine points each.
The Terriers shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55) for the game and eclipsed the 60-point mark for the first time since Jan. 25. BU hit 4-of-10 shots from beyond the arc and went 15-of-23 from the free throw line (65.2 percent). Lafayette finished with a 32.3 field goal percentage (20-of-62) and went 4-of-16 from the 3-point line. Lafayette went 15-of-21 from the free throw line.
The Leopards entered the game as the top rebounding team in the conference and held a 50-34 advantage on the boards.
BU jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the game and took a 6-2 advantage into the first media timeout. Agboola scored out of the stoppage to put the Terriers on top, 8-2, but BU went the next five minutes without a field goal until McKendrick hit a jumper with 10:44 to make it 11-6 in favor of the Terriers. The Leopards used a 4-0 spurt to make it a one-point game but Scannell connected on back-to-back 3-pointers and senior Danielle Callahan added a layup to give BU its largest lead of the half, 19-10, with 8:00 on the clock.
The Leopards began to chip away at the deficit with a pair of free throws from Fiacco and added a jumper from Homan to pull within five. Lafayette got BU’s lead down to three with a layup from Freeland, but Agboola answered with a layup of her own on the other end. Freeland then tied the game with 39 seconds to go with a triple. Each team closed out the half with a pair of free throws to send the teams into halftime with the scored knotted at 27-27.
The teams traded baskets to open the second half and Lafayette grabbed its first lead with a jumper from Fiacco. The teams went back-and-forth over the next eight minutes and a layup from Agboola knotted the game at 42-42 with 10:40 to play. The forward was fouled on the play and hit her free throw to put BU ahead, 43-42.
The play started an 11-2 run for the Terriers, as BU grabbed a 51-44 lead with a pair of free throws from Scannell. Maddie Peabody stopped the streak with a triple for the Leopards but freshman Sarah Hope answered with a trey on the other end to push BU’s lead to nine points, 57-48, with 5:30 to play.
Lafayette used a 7-0 run to make it a one-possession game, 59-57, with 3:12 to play. Agboola gave BU some breathing room by sinking a jumper with 2:42 on the clock. The Terriers did not hit another basket but relied on their defense to close out the game. Lafayette cut it to two with a pair of free throws from Homan with 1:29 on the clock but BU closed out the game for the victory.
BU returns to Case Gym for a pair of home games next week starting with Colgate on Wednesday (Feb. 12). Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
