BOSTON - Sophomore Amanda Cassera's goal off a corner in the 22nd minute proved to be the difference maker as the Boston University field hockey team recorded a 1-0 victory over visiting Pacific on Sunday afternoon at New Balance Field.
BU held a 19-8 shot advantage and doubled up the Tigers in corners (10-5) but needed just one tally to earn the win and even its season record at 2-2.
On their sixth corner of the first half, the Terriers converted on a play set up for junior Sofi Laurito at the top of the circle. Laurito spotted Cassera just above the right post and the sophomore was there to tip it in at the 21:12 mark.
Senior Valentina Cerda Eimbcke made four saves in goal for BU to earn her first shutout of the season.
The Terriers threatened early and often, earning six corners in the first 14 minutes of the contest. After coming up empty on its first five tries despite hitting the post and creating shots on target, BU executed its sixth perfectly, resulting in Cassera's marker.
The home team turned aside both shots on goal by Pacific in the first half and settled for a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
In the latter half, BU continued to defend its circle well, allowing just three shot attempts. On the other end, however, the Terriers penetrated the Pacific zone on several occasions but could not build on its lead.
A shot attempt by Laurito at the right post in the 49th minute was stopped by the foot of a Tiger defender, giving the Terriers a penalty stroke. Sophomore Hester van der Laan attempt sailed over the cage, however.
Laura Pujade turned in a nine-save performance for Pacific, which fell to 2-3 on the year.
The Terriers will return to action on Friday (Sept. 12) when they visit crosstown rival Boston College. Game time at Newton Campus Field is set for 7 p.m.
