The 17th-ranked Boston University field hockey team will look to remain in first place in the Patriot League standings when it makes the short trip to Holy Cross on Friday (Oct. 9). Game time at Hart Turf Field is set for 5 p.m.
The contest, which will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network, will serve as the kickoff to the inaugural Turnpike Trophy competition, a rivalry series between the Patriot League schools. Points will be awarded for head-to-head victories, both in the regular season and the postseason, or a higher finish at conference championships that are determined by team standings.
The Terriers are winners of five of their past six contests and enter the weekend with a record of 8-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Holy Cross is 6-5 with an even 1-1 league mark.
BU posted a pair of strong wins last weekend, topping American by a score of 5-3 on Saturday before edging Northeasten, 3-2, in overtime the following day. In their most recent contest, the Crusaders posted a 2-1 overtime victory against Bryant to improve to 5-0 at home this season.
On offense, Holy Cross is paced by a pair of underclassmen, as sophomore Maureen Connolly (5g, 6a) and freshman Emily Loprete (7g, 1a) have 16 and 15 points, respectively, thus far this season. Freshman Lauren Ineson has added 10 points on four goals and two assists.
The Crusaders have another freshman in goal with Megan Inch boasting a 1.72 goals-against average to go along with a .694 save percentage.
Junior Bea Baumberger Altirriba has enjoyed a terrific season so far for the Terriers, posting team highs in points (18) and assists (8). Fellow junior Hester van der Laan has is right behind with 16 points on six goals and four assists while senior co-captain Sofi Laurito has tallied six goals and an assist. Six other Terriers have at least three goals.
In goal, junior Cammy Jensen has started all 11 games and sports a 1.96 goals-against average and a .651 save percentage.
The Terriers and Crusaders, who first met back in 1980, have met 19 times. BU holds a 16-2-1 advantage, which now includes 16 straight wins after going 0-2-1 in the first three meetings. The Terriers posted a 4-0 shutout against Holy Cross at New Balance Field last season.
