Hope's Hot Hand Not Enough At UMass Lowell
December 1, 2015 | Women's Basketball
LOWELL, Mass. - Sarah Hope's sharp shooting from beyond the arc was not enough to lift the Boston University women's basketball team past UMass Lowell and the Terriers suffered a 70-57 loss to the River Hawks on Tuesday night in Tsongas Arena.
Hope led BU (0-6) with 20 points, going 6-for-12 from the 3-point line, which matched her career-best performance from long range.
Troi Melton was consistent throughout the game, scoring eight points in each half for her third consecutive game in double-figure scoring. She is averaging 15.3 points per game in the last three contests.
The Terriers shot 34.4 percent overall including 33.3 percent from long range while the River Hawks (1-5) went 42.6 percent from the floor. UML was strong in the paint, outscoring BU 32-30 and outrebounding the Terriers 43-36.
The River Hawks were led by Lindsay Doucette, who tallied 23 points of off 10-of-20 shooting. Asia Mitchell-Owens was an outside threat, finishing with 15 points and going 3-of-6 from long range.
The Terriers got off to a slow start due to pressure inside by Doucette, who scored six of UMass Lowell's first eight points. BU finally got some shots to drop late in the quarter to cut the River Hawk lead, which was as much as eight, to 13-8 by the end of the first period.
Hope brought the team back to life in the second quarter as she went 3-for-5 from long-range and scored 11 points to keep the Terriers within striking distance heading into the second half. Her 4-of-6 performance from the field accounted for more than half of BU's points in the period.
BU struggled to get its offense going coming out of halftime and UMass Lowell capitalized on it, outscoring the Terriers 15-9 in the third quarter. The Terriers kept it closer in the final period of the game but their efforts weren't enough to make up for the early deficit and BU settled for a 70-57 loss.
The Terriers head to New Hampshire next for a Saturday affair with the Wildcats. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
