Terriers Suffer First Loss Of Season At Vanderbilt
February 20, 2015 | Women's Lacrosse
NASHVILLE - Despite Mallory Collins reaching at least four goals in back-to-back games, the Boston University women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season to Vanderbilt, 16-9, at VU's Multipurpose Facility on Friday afternoon.
Collins, who leads the team with nine goals on the season, scored a game-high five against the Commodores (3-0), including two on free position opportunities, to match her career-high.
Kelsey Marafioti is the only other Terrier to record multiple goals, notching two, while Ally Adams matched her career-high with two assists.
BU (1-1) held Vanderbilt to 16 goals, the first sub-20 goal performance for the Commodores, who are averaging 22 per game. The Terriers caused 15 turnovers while VU was only able to disturb BU on 11 occasions. Vanderbilt also committed one more turnover than the Terriers but BU couldn't capitalize on the Commodore miscues.
Draw controls caused the most trouble for BU, with Vanderbilt winning 16-of-27. The Commodores capitalized on these wins, scoring quick goals off the draw including the opening draw control.
Vanderbilt opened scoring 10 seconds into the game, winning the opening draw and racing down the field to take a lead they would never relinquish. The Commodores kept this pace throughout the first stanza, leading to an 11-5 halftime lead.
The Terriers answered the first goal quickly to tie it at 1-1 less than two minutes into the contest but Vanderbilt scored the next four straight to pull away from BU early in the contest.
The second half started off with a Terrier goal. Collins netted her third of the game less than one minute into the period but Vanderbilt answered with another four-goal run to bring the score to 15-6 with 17 minutes to play.
BU scored the next three and prevented the Commodores from scoring for over 15 minutes, its longest scoring drought of the game.
Vanderbilt scored one more with 1:30 remaining to bring the final score to 16-9.
The Terriers open their home schedule on Wednesday when they host cross-state rival Massachusetts on Nickerson Field at 3 p.m.
