March 4, 2015 | Women's Basketball
HAMILTON, N.Y. - Despite an early 10-point lead the No. 10 seed Terriers dropped a 58-48 decision to No. 7 Colgate in the Patriot League Tournament First Round on Wednesday night. BU finished the season with a 5-25 overall record while the Raiders (9-21) will continue their 2014-15 campaign in the PL Quarterfinals against No. 2 seeded Army.
Senior Mollie McKendrick and redshirt-junior Troi Melton led the team with 14 points apiece while freshman Kara Sheftic had a near double-double with nine points and a career-high nine rebounds.
BU shot nearly 41 percent in the first half but struggled in the second and finished the game shooting less than 26 percent overall.
Turnovers were costly for the Terriers, who committed 20 miscues over the course of the game, which turned into 16 points for the Raiders.
One area BU excelled was in the paint, with the Terriers outrebounding Colgate 42-37, including 17 offensive boards which turned into 15 points.
The Terriers started the game with a purpose and quickly jumped out to an 8-2 lead less than three minutes into the contest. BU steadily added to its advantage, reaching its largest lead of the game, 10 points, midway through the period. The Terriers got to that differential by preventing a Colgate basket for seven minutes and scoring six points of their own during that span.
The Raiders were unwilling to settle for a double-digit deficit, however, and went on an 8-2 run to get within one point of BU but the Terriers kept fighting and scored the next four points to regain a five-point advantage.
Colgate scored the next four, however, and went into halftime trailing by just one point, 26-25.
The Raiders were quick to take their first lead of the game coming out of halftime, hitting a jumper to take a 27-26 lead, which they wouldn't relinquish for the remainder of the contest.
Colgate quickly found a double-digit advantage and then added to it until it reached it largest lead of the game, 45-28, with 10 minutes remaining. After not scoring a field goal for the first 11:30 of the period, the Terriers put together an offense in the final five minutes, cutting the Raider advantage from 17 to 10 points, where the score would stand.
