Terriers Open Season at Harvard Fall Classic

The two-time defending Patriot League champion Boston University women's tennis team opened the 2015-16 schedule over the weekend at the three-day Harvard Fall Classic. The Terriers were joined by competitors from the host Crimson, Boston College, Columbia, Yale, Wake Forest and UConn.
Sophomore Iryna Kostirko led BU in singles action with three victories, highlighted by a come-from-behind win over Katya Vasilyev, who competed in the No. 3-4 slots for BC last season. Her lone loss came against the Eagles' 90th-nationally ranked Lexi Borr, 6-0, 6-2.
Senior Johanna Hyoty tried to mount a rally in her opening match against Columbia sophomore and former five-star recruit Rima Asatrian but came up just short, 6-1, 1-6, 7-5. She followed up with a straight sets win over UConn and then dominated the Lions' five-star blue chipper, Star Makarome, with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Freshman Sabrina Faybyshev lost her opening round match to Columbia's other five-star blue-chip recruit, Andrea Kevakian, in a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 battle. Despite the loss, she carried the momentum from her strong performance into a pair of victories over the Atlantic Coast Conference. She first coasted past BC's No. 5 singles player Emily Safron, 6-0, 6-2, and then claimed a straight sets victory (6-3, 6-2) over Wake Forest's Xue Zhang, who had 11 wins at the No. 2 slot last season for the Demon Deacons.
Senior Madison Craft was the fourth Terrier with two singles victories. She rallied from a set down to defeat Yale's Caroline Lynch, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1, and later claimed a two-set victory over Columbia's Lindsey Mendelson.
In doubles action, four of BU's five duos posted a win. Senior Lauren Davis and Faybyshev had the Terriers' most impressive win (8-5) against Harvard's blue-chip recruit Erica Oosterhout and Annika Ringblom, who was a five-star recruit in 2014.
The Terriers will remain on the road and next visit Brown Invitational on Sept. 25-27.
