BOSTON - The defending Patriot League champion Boston University women's tennis team opened the 2016 dual season with a 7-0 sweep over Rhode Island on Sunday afternoon at the BU Track and Tennis Center.
The Terriers first swept through doubles action by a combined score of 18-7 and then coasted through singles action by dropping just 13 total games to the Rams (1-1).
Freshman Remi Ramos made an impressive debut by winning all of her games in singles and doubles. She teamed with senior Kim McCallum for a 6-0 doubles victory and then blanked Jordan Rucks in the No. 5 singles slot.
Two-time Patriot League Player of the Year Johanna Hyoty started her final year on a strong note by dispatching two-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team member Galina Chernykh, 6-3, 6-1, at the top singles slot. Earlier in the contest, she and freshman Sabrina Faybyshev posted a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Faybyshev carried the momentum to a comfortable 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles. Sophomore Iryna Kostirko, who triumphed at No. 3 doubles with junior Barbara Rodriguez, claimed the No. 3 singles point.
McCallum (#6) and senior Lauren Davis (#2) also rolled to easy wins to help BU complete the sweep.
The Terriers will next face Navy in a rematch of last year's Patriot League final on Sunday, Jan. 31, at the Boston Athletic Club with action set to begin at 10 a.m.
