HAMILTON, N.Y. - Four unanswered goals to start the second half sparked a 14-11 victory over Colgate for the Boston University women's lacrosse team on Wednesday night at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
Mallory Collins scored two goals in the first 40 seconds of the second half to spark the comeback and return the lead to the Terriers, who did not relinquish it for the remainder of the game. Collins finished the game with four goals.
Jill Horka matched her career-high and won nine draw controls to help put BU in scoring position and is now one away from tying the BU career draw control record. She also tallied two goals and an assist throughout the contest.
Ally Adams totaled three goals on the day including a 2-for-2 performance on free positions while Taylor Hardison contributed three assists and a goal. Sarah Andersen and Kaitlin Belval also had multi-point games, registering a goal and an assist apiece.
Caroline Meegan had an impressive day in net, totaling 12 saves behind a limiting Terrier defense. Colgate's Asil Asfour finished the day with seven saves.
Colgate opened scoring early but the Terriers responded on the next possession, grabbing the draw control to set up a Remy Nolan goal on the run to tie the game at 1-1. The pair exchanged goals once more before BU found its first lead of the game off of a Horka spin-and-shoot to give the Terriers a 3-2 advantage.
The Raiders countered with a three-goal run to go ahead by two, the largest lead of the game. Molly Kern was able to toss one in off of the feed from fellow freshman Belval with eight minutes left in the half but the Raiders fired back, whipping one past Meegan with under one minute remaining to regain the two-goal lead.
Sarah Andersen came through for the Terriers with the first free position goal of the day. The sophomore got to the eight-meter line following four-straight foul calls and finished the job with a high shot with 14 seconds remaining in the first half to make it a one-goal deficit going into halftime.
Mallory Collins set the pace for BU's second half as she scored her first two goals of the game in the opening 40 seconds. Horka and Hardison took it from there, scoring the next two goals to complete a four-goal run to start the second half and put the Terriers on top, 9-6.
Colgate was held scoreless for over 11 minutes to open the period, and was only able to total two goals in the first 21 minutes of the second half, allowing BU to reach its largest lead of the day when Adams scored on a free position shot to give the Terriers a 13-8 advantage with just four minutes left to play in the game.
The Raiders weren't finished yet, however, and put together a three-goal run over the ensuing three minutes to cut the Terrier lead to just 13-11 with over a minute left in the game.
BU was able to grab the next draw control, however, and ultimately got it to Collins, who netted her fourth of the day in the final minute after playing keep-away from the Raiders.
The Terriers are back in action on Saturday when they play the second game of a doubleheader with the men's team against Lehigh on Nickerson Field. The day has been dubbed "Lacrosse-A-Palooza" and will feature a free barbeque, games, prizes, giveaways, music and much more!
