PHILADELPHIA—Charlotte Castronovo of the women's lacrosse team and Justin Flynn of the men's track and field team represented Boston University at the Patriot League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) meetings in Philadelphia last weekend.
Castronovo, a junior, was named the SAAC president for this academic year while Flynn, also a junior, was BU's male representative as a member of SAAC.
"A lot of what we talked about was the results of the time-demand surveys that were distributed to student-athletes across the conference," Castronovo said. "This is an ongoing process, but we are hopeful changes will begin to happen as early as next summer. The league and the NCAA are really listening to our voices as student-athletes and are working towards providing students with the best possible collegiate experience."
"We also decided that we will continue the 'Heel and Sole' and 'One Shirt one Body' initiatives and created an additional drive called 'The Little Things Project' which is where student-athletes will collect the travel sized shampoo, conditioner and lotion bottles from hotels while on away trips and then donate them to homeless shelters."
The meetings also discussed ways to increase school spirit and student attendance at games, which Castronovo and Flynn will bring back to BU SAAC along with all of the other items discussed at the annual meeting.
"It was a very valuable dialogue with strong input from students representing each university," Fynn said. "It really helped to be able to hear what different SAAC chapters have accomplished thus far and what they intend to accomplish in the future. We also made care boxes for kids called Jared Boxes and went bowling. It was an overall awesome experience."
