NEWTON, Mass. – Despite scoring the first and final goal of its season opener, the Boston University men's soccer team fell short to crosstown rival No. 8 Boston College, 3-2, on Sunday evening at the Newton Campus Field. 2015 Patriot League Rookie of the Year Magnus Benediktsson led the Terrier offense with two assists, as the Eagles finished with a 17-9 advantage in shot attempts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Junior Anthony Viteri scored the Terriers' first goal of the season at 18:46 when he rifled a high shot from the top of the box inside the right post. The score was set up when the goalkeeper could not contain sophomore Magnus Benediktsson's initial attempt.
TURNING POINT - After being held off the scoreboard for 37 minutes despite an 8-3 advantage in shots, the Eagles scored a pair of goals within a three-minute stretch.
BU committed a foul as Callum Johnson tried to whip a cross into the box from the left side of the box. He followed up with a free kick that went toward the far post for Joshua Forbes to knock in at 37:48.
The Eagles took the lead for good at 40:48 when the flying Maximillian Schulze-Geisthovel got past the BU defense and scored on a through ball from Isaac Normesinu.
BC found the back of the net on what proved to be the game winner at 69:43 after Simon Enstrom pounced on a Terrier miscue, ran down the left side and rifled a shot toward the far post.
Looking to mount a rally, BU was dealt another setback seven minutes later when a Terrier received a red card during a slide tackle attempt.
Down but not out, Benediktsson forced a BC turnover at the top of the Eagles' box and found senior Felix De Bona for an easy goal at 87:19.
The Terriers were unable to get a shot off in the final two minutes for the loss.

GAME NOTES

The matchup featured two teams coming off 2015 NCAA appearances with the Eagles reaching the Elite Eight.
Sunday's game marked the first time a team was ranked in the rivalry since BU edged then-No. 13 BC, 1-0, on the road in 2012.
The loss snapped BU's two-game win streak in season openers. The Eagles handled the Terriers their last defeat in 2013 in overtime (2-1).
Now 26-18-8 all-time in the series, BC finished with a 17-9 advantage in shot attempts and 7-4 lead in corner kicks. Senior Matt Gilbert had five saves for the Terriers, while Cedric Saladin claimed the win behind two saves.
Benediktsson earned his first-career multi-point performance after tallying a team-high six assists last season.
Both BU scorers De Bona and Viteri were named this preseason to the MAC Hermann Award Watch List. BC's lone representative Zeiko Lewis was limited to two shot attempts.

The Terriers will next host in-state rival UMass on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
BU is unbeaten in the last five meetings (3-0-2) with an 8-4 advantage in goals scored.
