CHANDLER, Ariz. - Three members of the Boston University field hockey team have earned spots on the 2017 Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I All-Northeast Region squads, which were announced on Monday.
Senior midfielder Kali Shumock and junior back Ally Hammel received first-team nods while junior midfielder Allie Doggett was named to the second team. The Terrier trio was among 160 student-athletes who earned recognition across the five regions.
These three standouts, who are all first-time all-region honorees, were instrumental in BU's run to the Patriot League regular-season and tournament titles as they were all unanimous selections to the All-Patriot League First Team.
The 2017 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, Hammel anchored a Terrier defense that allowed just four goals during conference play and posted a 1.59 goals-against average for the season. The junior added two defensive saves and also contributed on the offensive end with 12 points on five goals and two assists. She was selected to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team and was twice named the league's defensive player of the week.
Shumock saved her best season for last, tallying 16 points on three goals and a team-high 10 assists. She led all Patriot League players in assists and 14 of her points came during the second half of the season. A co-captain, Shumock was tabbed the most valuable player of the Patriot League tournament after winning her third title as a Terrier.
Doggett teamed up with Shumock to create a formidable midfield for the Terriers this season, controlling possession and securing numerous circle penetrations to create offensive chances. The junior started all 22 games and tallied a pair of assists while becoming one of the top midfielders in the region.
These three will now be considered for NFHCA All-America honors, which will announced on Dec. 5.
BU, which finished the year with a 14-8 record, reached the NCAA tournament for the third time in four years and earned a 5-0 opening-round victory at home over Fairfield before giving eventual undefeated national champion UConn a tough battle in a 3-1 loss.
