November 28, 2017 | Field Hockey
CHANDLER, Ariz. - Junior back Ally Hammel of the Boston University field hockey team has been named the 2017 Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I Northeast Region Player of the Year, it was announced on Tuesday.
The Duxbury, Mass., native becomes the first Terrier to receive this honor, which was introduced in 2009.
Hammel joined Delaware's Greta Nauck (Mid-Atlantic), UConn's Charlotte Veitner (Mideast), Virginia's Tara Vittese (South) and Louisville's Nicole Woods (West) as this year's winners across the five regions. Hammel and Nauck were the only two juniors in the group and Hammel was the lone back to be honored. The five are now finalists for the NFHCA National Collegiate Player of the Year, which will be announced in December.
The 2017 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, Hammel was a unanimous selection to the All-Patriot League First team and on Monday was recognized as an NFHCA All-Northeast Region First Team member. She anchored a Terrier defense that allowed just four goals during conference play and posted a 1.59 goals-against average for the season. The junior added two defensive saves and also contributed on the offensive end with 12 points on five goals and two assists. She was selected to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team and was twice named the league's defensive player of the week.
Hammel, who was a forward during her freshman year at BU, moved to defense prior to her sophomore season and has now played in 63 career games and tallied 39 points on 16 goals and seven assists. She was one of 17 players who earned a spot on the U.S. National Development Squad this past summer following her play the U-21 Junior and Development Squad National Camp and the Young Women's National Championship.
