Terriers Edged by EMU and LBSU on Day One of 49ers' Tourney

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Boston University softball team opened the final regular season tournament of the year with a pair of tightly-contested losses to Eastern Michigan (4-3) and host Long Beach State (6-4) on Thursday afternoon at the LBSU Softball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • With two outs in the bottom of the first, Amanda Akles hit an RBI double against freshman Lizzie Annerino to give the Eagles the lead for good.
  • The Eagles collected three more runs off four hits and an error to grab a commanding 4-0 lead.
  • After allowing a two-out RBI single in the second in relief, senior Makinna Akers pitched four scoreless innings with the Eagles mustering just four hits.
  • For BU, sophomore Emily Morrow had a walk in the second and single in the fourth but was unable to get past second both times.
  • Morrow added her second single to lead off the seventh, as the Terriers loaded the bases with zero outs. 
  • EMU's Trisha Trujillo then hit senior Rachel Levine and walked senior Moriah Connolly to put two runs on the scoreboard for the Terriers before being relieved by Abbie Minsker.
  • Minsker gave up an RBI sacrifice fly to sophomore Alex Heinen but then induced a line out and pop up to preserve the Eagles' second one-run victory over the season against the Terriers.

THE TURNING POINT
  • Facing a 4-2 deficit in the bottom of the sixth, the 49ers collected four hits, including a two-RBI triple by Rachel Loera, against junior reliever Sydni Overly to grab the lead for good.
  • Sophomores Madi Killebrew and Alex Heinen tried to mount a rally in the seventh with a pair of singles, but the Terriers were unable to duplicate the efforts of their four-run fourth inning.
THE SETUP
  • A participant in last year's NCAA tournament alongside the Terriers, LBSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first against freshman Kali Magane with three singles ... The 49ers had the opportunity to add more, but they hit into a double play to end the inning.
  • After BU went hitless through three innings, senior Moriah Connolly started the fourth with a walk and eventually scored following singles by Heinen and junior Emma Wong.
  • Sophomore Alexa Ponce  then delivered a two-RBI double, and sophomore Emily Morrow added a two-out RBI single to extend the lead to 4-2.
  • The 49ers committed two errors in the fifth, but BU was unable to take advantage with an infield groundout.
  • LBSU started mounting its comeback during the bottom half by loading the bases against Magane and then recording an RBI groundout against Overly.
NEXT UP
  • After playing in Long Beach, the Terriers will make the short trek to Fullerton to face San Diego State at 2:30 p.m. ET and then defending Big West champion Cal State Fullerton at 7:30 p.m. ET.
  • The Aztecs defeated BU, 8-0, in five innings a week ago at the San Diego Classic.
