BOSTON – Making its fourth-straight and 17th-overall NCAA tournament appearance, the Patriot League champion Boston University women's tennis team will open the four-team Durham Regional against No. 15 and host Duke with action slated to begin Friday at 4 p.m.
The Terriers (11-10) and Blue Devils (20-5) will meet for the first time ever after No. 24 Tennessee (18-11) and Winthrop first battle each other at 1 p.m.Led by 32nd-year head coach Lesley Sheehan, BU enters the matchup on a three-game win streak after dispatching Loyola Maryland, Navy and Army West Point for the Patriot League title back on April 28-30. The Terriers have won four out of the last five and will face their second ranked opponent of the season after an earlier 7-0 loss at then-No. 26 Florida International.
The Terriers' last win over a ranked team occurred at then-No. 63 BC in 2013 with BU last defeating a team in the national polls outside of Massachusetts in 2009 at No. 52 VCU and No. 75 South Florida, respectively.
Reigning Patriot League Player of the Year Remi Ramos and the rest of the squad will try to claim BU's first-ever NCAA win against a Duke squad that is hosting its second consecutive regional after beating VCU (4-0) and falling to Texas (4-2) last season.
Ramos will be joined by two other 2017 All-PL honorees in Iryna Kostirko (1st) and senior Barbara Rodriguez (2nd). Sophomore Sabrina Faybyshev was the 2016 PL Rookie of the Year, and senior Madison Craft was named to the Academic All-PL team with Ramos.
Duke shared the ACC regular season title this season and is a perfect 12-0 at home with a combined 45-5 (.900) record dating back to the start of the 2013-14 campaign. The Blue Devils feature four nationally-ranked singles players – No. 43 Meible Chi, No. 55 Chalena Scholl, No. 80 Samantha Harris and No. 99 Kaitlyn McCarthy. Chi and McCarthy also make up the nation's No. 42-ranked doubles team.
Friday's winners will meet in the second round on Saturday (May 13) at 4 p.m. ET.
