Starr, Hammel Collect Major Awards; Five Named to All-PL Teams
October 30, 2018 | Field Hockey
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Senior Ally Hammel was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year for the second time in as many seasons and Sally Starr received PL Coach of the Year honors for the fourth consecutive season, as announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Five Terriers received All-Patriot League honors with Hammel, senior Allie Doggett and sophomore Ailsa Connolly all unanimously selected to the first team. Junior Kiley Gallagher and sophomore Petra Hall were second-team honorees.
BU captured its fourth consecutive Patriot League regular-season title with a perfect 6-0 record in conference play and will host the league tournament on Friday (Nov. 2) and Sunday (Nov. 4).
Hammel becomes the fourth player in PL history to receive Defensive Player of the Year accolades in back-to-back seasons and this marks the fourth consecutive year that a Terrier has won that award (Ellie Landsman - 2016; Rachel Coll - 2015).
This is the 10th time in Starr's storied career that she has earned conference coach of the year honors.
Hammel and Doggett are repeat selections to the All-PL First Team while Connolly joins the top squad after being a second-team pick last year as a freshman. Gallagher is on the second team for the second consecutive year and this marks Hall's first All-PL honor.
With a career-best 17 points on six goals and a team-best five assists, Hammel enters the postseason ranked second on the team in scoring. Doggett, who has played in the midfield and as a back this season, has three goals on just four shots to go along with an assist for seven points.
Hammel and Doggett - the team's co-captains - anchor a BU defense that allowed just nine goals during conference play and held top-five teams Princeton and UConn to their second-lowest shot totals of the regular season.
As she did last year as a rookie, Connolly is leading the Terriers in points (19) and goals (8). She's been named the PL Offensive Player of the Week twice this season and now has 41 points in 39 career games.
Gallagher continues to be an impressive two-way midfielder for the Terriers and had tallied six points on a goal and four assists. Her tally came in overtime to help the Terriers earn a road win over then-No. 10 Northwestern.
Hall is tied for second on the squad with Hammel in goals with six, including four game-winners - two of which came in overtime. She has added three assists for 15 points, one more than her freshman output.
BU will attempt to defend its 2017 Patriot League tournament title this weekend, beginning with a semifinal match-up against fourth-seeded Lafayette. Game time is set for 11:30 a.m.
