Hammel Repeats as NFHCA Northeast Region Player of the Year

GILBERT, Ariz. - For the second consecutive year, senior co-captain Ally Hammel of the Boston University field hockey team has been named the NFHCA Northeast Region Player of the Year, it was announced on Thursday.
The Duxbury, Mass., native became the first Terrier to ever receive this honor last season and now becomes the just the second player to win the award multiple times, joining Albany's Paula Heuser. Hammel joined Maryland's Linnea Gonzales (Mid-Atlantic), UConn's Cecile Pieper (Mideast), North Carolina's Ashley Hoffman (South) and Miami's Paula Portugal (West) as this year's winners across the five regions. The five are now finalists for the NFHCA National Collegiate Player of the Year, which will be announced in December.
A two-time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year honoree, Hammel tallied a career-best 17 points on six goals and a team-best five assists while anchoring a defense allowed just 8.6 shots per game and held top-five teams Princeton and UConn to their second-lowest shot totals of the season. BU posted a 12-8 record and went a perfect 6-0 in league play for the second time in as many years.
Hammel participated in the NFHCA Division I Senior Game on Nov. 17 and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Patriot League Championship after helping the Terriers win their third Patriot League title in four years. Hammel and the rest of her class never lost a conference game at home - posting a perfect 12-0 record - and captured the Patriot League regular-season title all four seasons.
Hammel was a unanimous All-PL First Team pick and a NFHCA All-Region First Team selection in each of the past two seasons. She finishes her stellar career with 56 career points on 22 goals and 12 assists in 83 contests.
