Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Oettinger Ties Shutout Record as Terriers Take Game One at UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. - Paced by junior Jake Oettinger's record-tying 13th career shutout, the Boston University men's ice hockey team posted a 3-0 victory over fourth-seeded UMass Lowell in the opening game of their best-of-three Hockey East quarterfinal series on Friday evening at Tsongas Center.

Freshman Joel Farabee opened the scoring at 6:24 of the second before sophomore Cam Crotty added a power-play tally late in the period.

An empty-netter by junior Patrick Curry secured BU's seventh win in its past eight Hockey East tournament games as Oettinger tied the program record for career shutouts held by Jack Ferreira '66 and John Curry '07.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams had a back-and-forth first period that ended up scoreless.
  • Farabee broke the deadlock as the freshman executed a perfect redirect for his team-leading 14th goal of the season.
  • From the right circle, Farabee got his stick on a right-point attempt by junior Dante Fabbro and the puck snuck just inside the far post with help from screens by sophomore Shane Bowers and Curry.
  • The first penalty of the game was not issued until the 17:59 mark of the second and the Terriers took full advantage of what would be their lone power-play chance of the night.
  • After losing the puck out of the top of the zone on the power play, the Terriers regrouped and sophomore David Farrance started a rush up the left side.
  • Farrance raced past the defense and found Crotty back door above the right post with 1:34 remaining in the second period for a 2-0 lead.
  • Oettinger and the BU defense turned in an impressive third period, allowing just four UML shots.
  • Curry added an empty-netter with 24.9 seconds left as Oettinger put the finishing touches on a 25-save shutout.
