Softball to Battle Two MAAC Members Sunday in Connecticut

BOSTON – Coming off a 3-1 home-opening win over Atlantic 10 preseason favorite UMass, the Boston University softball team will travel to Connecticut on Sunday for the Nor'easter Classic.
The Terriers were originally scheduled to play three games this weekend but due to inclement weather will now face Siena on Sunday (March 24) at the University of Hartford with a 9 a.m. start time and then Iona at Central Connecticut State with a 1 p.m. first pitch. Both opponents are members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU snapped a nine-game losing streak on Wednesday after starting the season at 10-5 with the help of freshman Aliyah Huerta-Leipner's go-ahead two-RBI double against UMass in the sixth inning.
- The double helped Huerta-Leipner (.273) draw even with classmate Nicole Amodio (.234) for a team-leading five extra-base hits ... Huerta-Leipner has reached home 15 times and also has 14 RBIs.
- Senior Alexa Ponce (.276) collected two singles against UMass and currently owns a team-high four doubles, while senior Alex Heinen (.250) has six homers and 19 RBIs.
- Senior Emily Morrow is batting a team-high .329 with 11 RBIs, and sophomore Marina Sylvestri is second at .281 with a team-high four sacrifice hits.
- Freshman Emily Gant hit a solo shot against the Minutewomen to become the fifth Terrier this season to homer ... She owns a .275 on-base percentage while holding opponents to a .272 average with the help of 58 strikeouts in 59.0 innings.
- Sophomore Ali DuBois (9-6, 1.81 ERA) went the distance for the seventh time in the circle against UMass and has tallied 90 strikeouts in 85.0 innings with opponents batting .245 ... Both Gant (2-6, 2.73 ERA) and freshman Julia Handfield (1-2, 4.96 ERA) have combined for the other three wins.
Siena @ Hartford, 3-9 (Sunday, 9 a.m.)
- The Saints are currently on a five-game losing streak, most recently falling to Evansville (7-4) and East Tennessee State (11-5) at the Buccaneer Classic on March 9.
- Siena owns wins over Cornell (10-2), Presbyterian (4-1) and North Florida (4-1) after posting an 18-26 (13-7 MAAC) record last year.
- Siena is hitting .272 as a team, but opponents are batting .346 with 12-3 lead in homers and 26-12 advantage in doubles.
- Madysen Cossack leads the Saints at .429 with five doubles and nine RBIs with Isabelle DeChiaro (.387) close behind at seven RBIs ... Patricia Kalesse (.324) is the third Saint above .300 while earning a team-high nine runs scored.
- Maddie McMahon (3-4, 5.45) owns 26 strikeouts against 20 walks in 36.1 innings while holding opponents to .279 ... Brooke Hughes (0-2, 8.22 ERA) has started three other games.
- BU and Siena will meet for the first time in program history.
- While BU is facing Siena at Hartford, the Gaels will battle Maine at CCSU trying to snap their three-game losing streak ... They fell at Pacific (1-0) following two defeats at San Jose State (2-1, 8-1).
- Iona owns a 7-1 win against UMass Lowell after posting a 19-27 (11-9 MAAC) overall record last season.
- Iona is batting .241 while holding teams to .275 ... Opponents own a sight 16-15 lead in doubles and 9-4 advantage in homers with a 20-2 lead in stolen bases.
- Jessica Chilcott (.372) and Natalia Meray (.333) both own 16 hits apiece ... Chilcott, Ciarra DiGuilio (.281) and Kimberly Chiapparelli (.256) own three five RBIs apiece.
- Kara Zazzaro (1-5, 2.01 ERA) has gone the distance in all six starts with 41 strikeouts in 45.1 innings while holding opponents to .197 ... Samantha Bender (0-3, 3.15 ERA) and Marnie Skinner (0-5, 9.09 ERA) have combined for the other eight starts.
- BU is 6-0 all-time against the Gaels in a series dating back to 1995 ... The Terries eliminated Iona, 4-3, in the 2012 NCAA Regionals, and claimed a pair of victories last year at the Nor'easter Classic (8-0, 4-2).
