Softball Clinches Patriot League Top Seed With Saturday Sweep at Army
April 18, 2026 | Softball
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Highlighted by three homers and three doubles, the Boston University softball team posted wins of 10-4 and 8-2 at Army West Point on Saturday afternoon to take the weekend series and clinch at least a share of the Patriot League regular-season title.
With the doubleheader sweep in response to Friday's 6-4 late-inning loss, the Terriers (36-13) improved to 13-2 in conference play to secure the top seed and hosting rights for the Patriot League tournament, which will take place on May 7-9. BU now just needs one home win vs. Holy Cross on April 25-26 or for both the 7-5 Black Knights (25-22) and Colgate (20-23) to lose one contest to claim sole possession of the regular season title.
Senior Kasey Ricard (26-5) earned both wins in the circle with the help of five combined strikeouts over 12.1 innings of work to become the only active pitcher across all three NCAA divisions to reach 100 career victories. Senior Megan Coyle and junior Kylie Doherty each earned three hits at the plate on the day, combining for seven RBIs, with Coyle homering twice in game two.
In Saturday's opener, junior Livia Christopher went 2-for-2 alongside a walk and hit-by-pitch to tally four runs and senior Olivia DeLong added a pinch-hit three-run home run. Coyle led the offense in game two batting 3-for-4, while Doherty and junior Sophie Naivar both hit 2-for-4.

GAME 1: BU - 10, Army - 4
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After both teams earned a single in the first inning, the Terriers grabbed the lead for good during the second with three runs off two hits.
- BU loaded the bases with a walk and two infield singles to set up RBI at-bats from Christopher (hit-by-pitch), senior Brooke Deppiesse (hit-by-pitch) and Doherty (walk) for the 3-0 lead.
- Christopher started off the fourth with a single and eventually scored on a fielding error that was followed by freshman Irys Kline's two-out, RBI double that found the gap in left center and reached the fence to push the lead to 5-0.
- With sophomore Camryn Lyons (double) and Christopher (walk) on base, senior Olivia DeLong launched a two-out, three-RBI homer to right for a commanding 8-0 advantage.
- Ricard was one strike away from a run-rule decision when Samantha Sims fouled off a a pitch and then smacked the full-count pitch to right center for an RBI double.
- Trying to continue the rally in the sixth, the Black Knights loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch, walk and bunt single with one out before claiming an RBI walk.
- Senior Haley Ganino replaced Ricard in the circle and earned a pair of ground outs to limit the damage to just two allowed runs to enter the seventh ahead, 8-3.
- The Terriers loaded the bases again with two walks and Christopher's second single to set up Doherty's RBI single and Kline's RBI walk.
- Army managed one more run on an RBI sac fly before Ganino sealed the victory on a swinging strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Following a scoreless first inning, Coyle launched an 0-1 pitch in the second for a one-out, solo blast to center.
- Lyons, junior Kyomi Apalit and Christopher then earned three straight walks on 3-2 pitches to set up sophomore Kieren McHugh's pinch-hit RBI single and Doherty's bases-clearing double for a commanding 5-0 lead.
- With two outs in the bottom half, Army ripped a 2-1 pitch from Ricard for an RBI triple down the right field line before striking out swinging.
- BU though responded in the third with Naivar singling up the middle and scoring on Coyle's two-run homer to left for 7-1 advantage.
- Naivar delivered one more single during the sixth with two outs to plate freshman Madolyn Coupal.
- Army scored a second run in the seventh by hitting back-to-back singles and adding an RBI grounder but then grounded out again to first and fouled out to Kline in right.
- BU all-time wins leader and 11th-year head coach Ashley Waters is just one victory away from reaching the 400-win milestone.
- Thanks to the three homers in the DH sweep, BU has now gone yard 51 times, surpassing the 2010 squad's of 48 homers and 14 away from tying the 2007 program.
- Coyle became the second Terrier this season to post two homers in one contest after Doherty accomplished the feat against Charlotte in February and last weekend at Colgate.
- The Terriers improved to 35-14 all-time against the Black Knights
- BU will return home to host Rhode Island on Tuesday (April 21) at 1 p.m. with the contest airing on NESN.
- The Terriers will face the Rams for the first time since earning a 4-1 victory in 2019.
