Abel Named Hockey East Goaltender of the Month

WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Ashton Abel made quite an impression during his first few weeks on the Boston University men's ice hockey team as the rookie was named the Hockey East Stop It Goaltender of the Month for January, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
Abel joined the Terriers during the semester break and posted a 3-0-1 record in four starts during the month. In January, the freshman led all Hockey East netminders in both goals-against average (1.68) and save percentage (.936).
In his first career start at Merrimack on Jan. 17, Abel made 27 saves in a 3-2 victory. He followed that up with a 17-save shutout in his home debut a week later against then-No. 12 UMass Lowell.
He stopped 25 shots in a 2-2 draw with the River Hawks the following night and also had a 28-save performance in a 4-2 road triumph against Vermont on the final day of the month.
Abel came to BU from the Okotoks Oilers of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, where he posted a 2.16 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage this season in 26 games. He went undefeated in his first 17 starts (16-0-1) for the Oilers with three shutouts during the stretch.
