Mahoney Named Lou Henson All-American, Featured on SportsCenter

March 30, 2020

BOSTON – After helping lead the Boston University men's basketball team to its first Patriot League title, senior Max Mahoney was named to the 2020 Lou Henson All-America Team as announced by CollegeInsider.com.

The Basking Ridge, New Jersey, native is the first Terrier to receive "mid-major" All-America honors from an organization since D.J. Irving was honored in 2013 by College Sports Madness. A two-time team captain, Mahoney is also the first to be named to the Lou Henson All-America Team since John Holland ('11) was recognized in 2011. To add to the long list of accolades, Mahoney was also featured Sunday night during SportsCenter's daily #SeniorNight segment in which ESPN recognizes highly-accomplished collegiate and high school seniors whose seasons were cut short by the global COVID-19 pandemic.

All 40 players on the Lou Henson All-America Team are eligible for the Lou Henson Player of the Year Award, which is annually given to the top "mid-major" player in Division I college basketball during the Final Four weekend. However, due to the event's cancelation, William & Mary's Nathan Knight was announced as the winner at the same time of the release of All-Americans. The award is named in honor of the winningest coach in both New Mexico State and Illinois men's college basketball history. When Henson retired from coaching in 2005, he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779.

The 2020 Patriot League tournament MVP Mahoney had a memorable senior campaign, leading the Terriers in points (15.5 ppg), rebounds (8.3 rpg), steals (1.1 spg) and blocks (0.5 bpg) while also ranking second in assists (2.6 apg). In the PL semifinals against Bucknell, he became just the fourth in program history to reach 1,500 points and 700 rebounds with Holland the last to accomplish the feat.

Mahoney posted a double-double in six of his last seven games and finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in the PL title win at top-seed Colgate. He earlier recorded a career-high 38 points at Binghamton and nearly once had a triple double with 18 points, nine rebounds and eight assists vs. Army West Point en route to College Sports Madness Mid-Major Player of the Week honors.

Mahoney claimed his third All-PL award along with his first USBWA and NABC All-District honors earlier in the month of March.
