Moseley Named Head Coach at Wisconsin
March 26, 2021 | Women's Basketball
BOSTON – After turning the Boston University women's basketball program into a Patriot League title contender in three seasons as head coach, Marisa Moseley (CAS'04) has accepted the head coaching position at Wisconsin.
Moseley led the Terriers to a 45-29 record while at the helm of the program, pushing her alma mater to its first Patriot League Tournament championship game appearance this past season, and went 33-15 in conference games.
"I'm grateful to Marisa for the incredible impact she has made on our women's basketball program, both as a player and as a coach. She proved to be a tremendous leader on the court, turning our team into a Patriot League title contender and developing our student-athletes into some of the best players in the conference," said BU director of athletics Drew Marrochello. "All of us at BU are looking forward to following Marisa's coaching career and we wish her nothing but the best in the future."
The 2019 Patriot League Coach of the Year quickly rebuilt the Terriers as they finished as the second seed in the conference tournament in each of the past two seasons. This past year, BU won the Patriot League North Division and posted a 10-2 record during the regular season, which matched the 1994-95 team for the best record in program history through the first 12 games. BU made its deepest run yet in the Patriot League Tournament, appearing in its first title game in a decade while finishing the season with a 12-3 overall mark. Under Moseley's tutelage, Katie Nelson earned three straight All-Patriot League Team selections, highlighted by a First Team choice this past season after ranking second in the league in both assists per game and assist-to-turnover ratio.
"I would like to thank President Brown, Drew Marrochello, Kristie Bowers, Brendan Sullivan, Brittany Kane, and the entire BU community for an incredible three years," said Moseley. "Coming back to BU was a no-brainer for me in 2018 and the people were the main reason. I feel so fortunate to have forged lasting bonds with so many folks in this department and across campus. The administration, professors, fans, and donors have embraced my staff and I from day one, and truly believed in the vision we set forth. This program is just getting started and the best is yet to come. Finally, I would like to thank my players and their parents. It has been one of the greatest joys of my life to come back to my alma mater and coach such incredible women. You all made me a better coach and better person during our time together and I am forever indebted. I love you all very much and no matter where you are, I will always be just a phone call away. Once a Terrier, always a Terrier!"
The 2019-20 season saw BU establish itself as a premier program in the league as it registered a 12-6 conference clip along with an 18-12 overall record. Maggie Pina was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year, while Pina, Maren Durant and Sydney Johnson became the first trio from the same program in Patriot League history to earn all-rookie status.
Moseley took the league by storm in her first season, as she was named the first Patriot League Coach of the Year in program history after leading BU to its first winning season in five years. Moseley became the second coach in the program's 46-year history to be named the conference coach of the year. Additionally, she was one of two NCAA DI women's basketball first-year head coaches to collect conference of the year honors in 2019.
Moseley has had a great presence off the court, as she was a driving force behind the creation of the Patriot League Anti-Racism Commission. She was also key in the formation of BU's Social Justice & Inclusion Committee, which is comprised of 13 coaches and staff members within the department.
"Marisa also set an example of how to make a difference off the court, showing courage and character as a prominent voice in the fight for social justice," added Marrochello.
Prior to being named head coach of the Terriers, Moseley was on Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Geno Auriemma's staff in Storrs for nine seasons, helping the Huskies claim five national championships (2010, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016) while reaching the Final Four all nine years. She coached three National Players of the Year and 11 All-Americans while assisting UConn to an overall 331-14 record, which included two of the longest winning streaks in NCAA basketball history (111 and 90 consecutive games).
Prior to serving as an assistant coach at UConn, Moseley filled the same capacity at Minnesota (2007-09), where she led the Golden Gophers to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances while posting an overall record of 40-24.
Moseley first broke into the coaching ranks during the 2005-06 season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Denver, helping guide the Pioneers to a 20-11 record, marking their first 20-plus win campaign in six years.
A native of Springfield, Massachusetts, Moseley completed her four-year (2000-04) playing career as the Terriers' third-leading shot blocker (114 blocks). The defensive specialist and two-time team captain earned All-America East Conference Third Team honors in 2002-03 after leading BU in both steals and blocked shots.
Moseley helped the Terriers win the 2003 America East championship and make their first and only appearance in the NCAA Tournament. She graduated from BU's College of Arts & Sciences in 2004 with a degree in sociology.
