BOSTON – Seeking its first Patriot League title, the sixth-seeded Boston University men's tennis team will open the conference tournament at host No. 3 Lehigh on Friday with action slated to begin at 3 p.m.
The Terriers enter the event at 3-5 with a 1-2 mark against Patriot League competition. They most recently posted a 4-0 win at No. 9 Holy Cross following 4-3 loss to No. 5 Colgate and 4-0 defeat to No. 2 Army West Point. Defending PL champion Navy is the top seed with No. 4 Bucknell, No. 7 Loyola Maryland and No. 8 Lafayette rounding out the list.
BU is 5-1 all-time in the Patriot League quarterfinals and will be facing Lehigh for the third time in the tournament. The Terriers became the first team in five years to eliminate the Mountain Hawks in the quarterfinals, 4-3, in 2015 and accomplished the feat again in 2018, 4-1. Lehigh won the last meeting between the two programs during the 2019 regular season at Army, 4-2.
Five Terriers have claimed at least two singles wins during the shortened spring schedule. Senior and two-time PL Player of the Week David Bogatin went 6-1 with a 5-1 mark at line 1. Classmate Pete Siozios posted a 4-4 mark with a 3-2 record in the No. 2 slot, while senior Owen Lu went 2-3 at line 3. Freshmen Jose Maria Robalino, Tanisq Mallpani and Johann Sajonz posted a combined 6-9 record in lines 3-6. Junior Max Hartenstein has experience in the PL tournament, winning his quarterfinal matchup in 2019, and has made two appearances at line 4 in April.
In doubles action, head coach Dejan Stankovic has used eight total combinations during the dual season. Lu and Robalino own a team-high five wins against three losses with a 3-3 mark in the top slot, while Bogatin and Sajonz are 3-1 together. Siozios and Mallpani have teamed together for a 2-3 record at line 3.
The winner of Friday's match will face either No. 2 Army or No. 7 Loyola Maryland on Saturday in the semifinals at 3 p.m. The last two remaining teams will face off for the automatic NCAA berth Sunday at 12 p.m.
