Terrier Twelve - #3: Cross Country Teams Shine at PL Championship

July 30, 2021

Returning for a 13th year, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.

Coming in at No. 3 in this year's Terrier 12 is the men's and women's cross country teams' success at the Patriot League Championship.

The women defended their Patriot League title thanks to top-five finishes from Andrea Claeson and Sophia Jacobs-Townsley. Claeson, the PL Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, was the conference runner-up after she finished the 3.7-mile race with a time of 19:41.4, over 10 seconds ahead of the third-place performer. Claeson became the first Terrier since 2014 to qualify for the NCAA Championship.

Jacobs-Towsnley joined Claeson on the All-Patriot League First Team thanks to a fourth-place finish. Madeline Bachmann finished 10th in her Patriot League debut to earn Second Team All-Patriot League accolades. Veronica Kriss and Corinne Batsu finished 15th and 16th, respectively, to help BU claim the title. Batsu was seven seconds ahead of a 17th-place runner with Army West Point, which allowed BU to win a tiebreaker with the Black Knights.

The men's team finished second thanks to top-five finishes from Brett Davidson and Foster Malleck. They finished third and fourth, respectively, to earn First Team All-Patriot League honors. For Davidson, this was the second consecutive season that he earned First Team All-PL recognition. The duo also claimed USTFCCCA All-Academic accolades, as did Claeson and Jacobs-Townsley.

Freshman Matthew Mason was named Outstanding Rookie of the Meet after he finished 12th, picking up Second Team All-Patriot League accolades as well. Mason was the third Terrier to be celebrated as the conference's top rookie at the championship meet, joining Alexander Seal (2015) and Paul Luevano (2016). Jonathan Fierro joined Mason as a Second Team All-Patriot League selection after he placed 14th. All eight Terrier men that ran finished in the top 30.
