Terrier Twelve - #5: Field Hockey Completes Undefeated Regular Season

July 23, 2021

Returning for a 13th year, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.

Coming in at No. 5 in this year's Terrier 12 is the field hockey team, which put together an undefeated regular season before coming up just short of another Patriot League title in Sally Starr's 40th season as the head coach at BU.

The Terriers went 4-0 in a shortened regular season to earn the right to host the Patriot League tournament for the fifth time in the past six seasons. After a 5-1 win in the semifinals, COVID contact tracing resulted in seven players being unavailable for the championship game including five starters and both goalkeepers. A valiant effort by the team and first-time goalkeeper Pili Alvarez came up just short in a 2-1 overtime loss to Bucknell.

The team opened the year with a thrilling 2-1 win at Holy Cross thanks to a late goal from junior Rebecca Janes. Senior Alexis Pettisani's first career goal pushed the Terriers to a 2-1 overtime win at Lafayette in the second game of the season. In the home opener against Colgate, BU had only 10 field players eligible due to COVID protocols, resulting in no substitutions. After the Raiders opened the scoring, senior Kathryn Scheerer and sophomore Ellie McIntyre each scored to lead BU to a 2-1 victory.

The Terriers closed out an undefeated regular season with a 5-2 win over Lehigh on Senior Day and were paced by a two-goal effort from senior Liz Ryan. That win allowed BU to clinch the top seed and hosting rights for the PL tournament. In the semifinals, Janes became the first player in league history to record seven points in a PL tournament game as she recorded her first collegiate hat trick and added an assist in a win over Holy Cross.

Starr was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the fifth time in the past six seasons and Scheerer capped her career with NFHCA Third Team All-America honors. Scheerer joined Pettisani, Janes and Ryan on the NFHCA All-Region teams.
