UMass Survives Second-Half Men's Soccer Attack, 2-1

BOSTON – Despite finishing with a six-shot advantage and junior Ronaldo Marshall netting his first goal of the season, the Boston University men's soccer team came up short to UMass, 2-1, on Friday night at Nickerson Field.

Helped by a successful 45th-minute penalty kick, the Minutemen (2-0-1) were on their heels for most of the second half and had to withstand an 11-2 deficit in shots to defeat the Terriers (0-3-0). Marshall led the BU rally with five of his game-high seven shot attempts, including two that were saved by goalie Marvyn Dorchin and another by the left post.

"I thought the first 10 minutes of the game we were good but then became too casual," said head coach Kevin Nylen. "We didn't push what we had stressed was part of the game plan and that got away from us. In the second half, I thought we were very good. We dominated in terms of possession and chances. We were better in terms of how we wanted to implement our plan. That was the goal for the whole game, but it didn't happen in the first half. We paid for it against a side that will make you pay based upon how they are. Hats off to them, they defended and were tough."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the seventh minute, senior Gianluca Arlotti set up a dangerous header from sophomore Eitan Rosen that went just over the crossbar.
  • After both Dorchin and junior BU keeper Francesco Montali made a save in the 10th minute, UMass earned four consecutive corners during a two-minute stretch starting at 18:30 but was unable to break the scoreless deadlock.
  • UMass struck first when Yosuke Hanya pushed the ball up toward the box while being hounded and placed a through ball up to Alec Hughes for a quick shot and 1-0 advantage at 30:30.
  • The Terriers were seemingly in position to enter the half down just one goal but UMass was able to mount a counter and draw a foul in the box  to set up Joe Leslie's PK shot past Montali at 44:23.
  • Down but not out, Marshall set the tone for the second half with a header that nailed the left post at 50:45.
  • Marshall broke through seven minutes later by playing the ball back to Rosen and then racing toward the net to head in a lofted service pass.
  • Staying on the attack, Marshall had an attempt blocked at 69:52 and then saw a low shot attempt stopped by a diving Dorchin at 71:04.
  • UMass blocked two more attempts from juniors Quinn Matulis and Colin Innes during the final five minutes to preserve the victory.
GAME NOTES
  • Marshall entered the game with just one shot attempt in two contests and finished with a personal best seven while also earning his fifth career goal.
  • Rosen earned his third career assist after totaling two in the shortened four-game spring schedule.
  • Dorchin tallied five saves for UMass, while Montali earned three for BU.
  • Earning an at-large berth to the last NCAA tournament, the Minutemen have now earned back-to-back one-goal games after the Terriers claimed a 3-2 victory in 2018.
UP NEXT
  • The Terriers will next visit Merrimack on Monday (Sept. 6) at 4 p.m.
  • The Warriors earned a 3-0 win at BU in the last meeting in 2019.
